fix(sandbox): probe() test-loads the filter instead of only importing pyseccomp - #47
probe() now loads the real seccomp filter in a throwaway child process, rather than only checking that pyseccomp imports, and caches the answer. The load step is split out of install() into _load_filter(). That way the child does not call probe() again and recurse, since install() starts by probing.
Why
On a kernel built without seccomp filter support (Synology DSM 4.4.302+ on a DS920+), pyseccomp imports fine but every seccomp_load fails with ECANCELED. probe() reported that as available. Hosts therefore trusted a sandbox that could not exist, and every plugin was refused at run time with SandboxRefused. In ROMarr the result was empty plugin searches with "sandboxed": true and no visible reason, and its unconfined fallback never triggered. Details and evidence are in #93.
Behaviour
Host
Before
After
Kernel with seccomp
available, confined
unchanged: available, install() still blocks socket()/execve()
Kernel without seccomp
reported available, every plugin refused
(False, "seccomp filter cannot be loaded here: … [Errno 125] Operation canceled"), so the host can make an explicit, logged choice
The probe costs one short-lived child process, once per process, because the result is cached.
Tested
pytest tests: 3334 passed, 5 skipped
Kernel with seccomp: probe() → available; socket() raises PermissionError after install()
Simulated failing load (ECANCELED): probe() → unavailable, with the reason
On the affected DS920+, with this sandbox.py bind-mounted into the ROMarr 1.6.0 / 1.7.0 image: /api/v1/hub/status reports "sandboxed": false with the real reason, ROMarr takes its logged unconfined fallback, and plugin search and fetch work end to end
Follow-up for ROMarr
ROMarr pins rom-hub 8e46348 in its Dockerfiles, so it needs a pin bump to pick this up.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Sandbox availability checks now confirm that the security filter can load, rather than relying only on whether the required package is present.
When the sandbox is unavailable, the reported reason can include details from the failed check.
Behavior Changes
Installing the sandbox now checks that the system is running Linux.
… pyseccomp
On a kernel built without seccomp filter support (Synology DSM's 4.4.302+ on a
DS920+), pyseccomp imports fine but every seccomp_load fails with ECANCELED.
probe() reported that as available, so hosts trusted a sandbox that could not
exist: ROMarr showed sandboxed=true, never took its unconfined fallback, and
every plugin was refused at run time (SandboxRefused) with no results and no
way to opt in from ROMarr.
probe() now loads the real filter in a throwaway child (loading is
irreversible) and caches the answer. The load step is split out of install()
as _load_filter() so the child does not probe again and recurse.

The seccomp probe now test-loads the filter in a throwaway subprocess and caches the result. Filter loading is shared with install(), which checks for Linux and loads the filter directly.

Summary
Filter loading and installation src/rom_hub/sandbox.py
install() checks for Linux and calls _load_filter(). The helper imports pyseccomp and loads the filter.
Cached child-process probe src/rom_hub/sandbox.py
probe() caches its result and test-loads the filter in a subprocess. Process-launch errors and nonzero exit statuses produce an unavailable result with failure details.
The ROMarr issue about Synology seccomp support describes a probe that reports availability without loading the filter. This change adds the test-load check and returns the failure reason.
Merge Risk: Low · up to a8514
The change is mergeable with a follow-up test for failed filter loading. Without it, a future regression could cause the CLI to misstate sandbox availability.

Explanation
The title names the main change: probe() now test-loads the seccomp filter instead of only importing pyseccomp. The raw summary and objectives confirm this matches the changeset, which caches the probe result and runs _load_filter() in a throwaway subprocess.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The change meets the coding requirements in [#93]. probe() delegates to an lru_cache result, imports pyseccomp, and test-loads the filter in a separate Python child. _load_filter() contains the irreversible load operation and does not call probe(). install() calls _load_filter() directly and preserves the Linux guard and confined filter behavior. Child failures return False with stderr or exit-status detail, which exposes the failure reason to the existing host fallback. Existing sandbox tests cover probe results, Linux installation, socket blocking, and post-filter imports.

Explanation
The reviewed change is limited to src/rom_hub/sandbox.py and supports [#93]. It changes probe caching and filter loading only. It does not add the separate ROMarr pin bump, operator opt-in, or ROMarr UI work identified as follow-up scope.

Scope the coverage gap to the probe() contract, not to SDK fallback.
The untested branch is _probe_cached's nonzero-child return at src/rom_hub/sandbox.py:70-81. No current test drives it. A regression that reports a failed filter load as available would pass the suite.
In this repository, the consumers of that result differ:
src/rom_hub/cli.py:681 calls probe() and prints available and reason in the operator approval note. This is the in-repo consumer of the probe's unavailable reason.
The SDK runner does not use probe(). src/rom_hub_sdk/runner.py:62-63 calls install_sandbox(), bound to rom_hub.sandbox.install, and catches SandboxUnavailable. The runner's fallback state comes from install()'s exception.
The suggested test needs no new import. tests/test_sandbox.py already imports subprocess at module top, and it already imports probe. The test imports sandbox inside the function, which is consistent with the file's style.
Suggested coverage, scoped to the probe contract:

Add a test for the nonzero-child branch in `_probe_cached` that mocks

reports unavailable and includes the child’s error detail in its reason. Clear
`_probe_cached`’s cache before and after the test so the result is isolated.
