Honors the configured SMTP security mode for outbound email and fixes the duplicate migration version that prevented database-backed tests from loading.
TLS now requires STARTTLS and returns an error if STARTTLS is unavailable or the handshake fails.
None skips STARTTLS; SSL continues to use implicit TLS.
SMTP AUTH is skipped when no username is configured, and credentials are not sent over a remote plaintext connection.
Renumbered the Slack integration migration from 000013 to 000014; SQL is unchanged. Version 000013 is already used by the cancelled-state migration, and the collision prevented all migrations from loading.
Why this approach
Go's smtp.SendMail opportunistically attempts STARTTLS whenever the server advertises it, so it cannot honor an explicit None setting. The sender now uses smtp.Client and applies each security mode explicitly. The migration version correction allows the existing database-backed tests to load migrations.
Database / migrations
No SQL schema change. The Slack integration up/down migration pair is renumbered to 000014 so its version is unique.

Test plan
GitHub Actions API CI run passed: dependency verification, formatting, build, go vet, and go test ./....
Local web typecheck, ESLint, and Prettier checks passed.
Local go test ./internal/mail -count=1 passed, including SMTP mode and protocol probe tests.
Local npm run validate reaches the database tests, but Testcontainers cannot start PostgreSQL on this Windows host (rootless Docker is not supported on Windows). The full API test suite passed in CI.
Manual smoke test against a configured SMTP relay was not run; regression tests use local ephemeral SMTP servers.

Bug Fixes
SMTP security settings now behave consistently: TLS is the default, SSL uses implicit TLS regardless of port, and NONE sends without TLS.
TLS delivery requires STARTTLS and fails rather than falling back to an unsecured connection if STARTTLS is unavailable or fails.
SMTP authentication is created only when a username is configured.
Existing state entries marked “canceled” are now normalized to “cancelled.”
Migration 000013 is already used by the cancelled-state migration.
Assign Slack integration version 000014 to allow migration loading and database-backed tests.

Honor None by skipping STARTTLS and require a successful STARTTLS upgrade for TLS.
Keep SSL on implicit TLS and cover the wire behavior with local SMTP probes.
ClosesDevlaner#404
Co-Authored-By: OpenAI Codex <noreply@openai.com>
SMTP sending now uses the configured security mode to select implicit TLS, STARTTLS, or no TLS. Authentication is omitted when no username is configured. The migrations also make Slack table creation conditional and change matching state group values from canceled to cancelled.

Summary
SMTP security and message delivery apps/api/internal/mail/mail.go, apps/api/internal/mail/mail_test.go
The sender defaults an empty security setting to TLS, supports SSL with implicit TLS, requires STARTTLS for TLS, and skips TLS for NONE. It creates authentication only when a username is configured and sends SMTP commands through a shared helper. Tests cover security modes, TLS and authentication failure paths, and SMTP command handling.
The migration creates slack_channel_links only if the table does not already exist.
Canceled state normalization apps/api/migrations/000015_refix_cancelled_state_group.up.sql, apps/api/migrations/000015_refix_cancelled_state_group.down.sql
The migration changes states.group from canceled to cancelled for matching rows. The rollback migration executes SELECT 1 without schema changes.

The description covers the change, rationale, linked issue, affected API surface, migration renumbering, test results, limitations, AI assistance, and breaking-change status. It is sufficiently complete, although the migration checklist and some standard checklist items are not explicitly checked.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #404 requires the SMTP security setting to control STARTTLS. The reviewed code maps NONE to a plaintext SMTP client without calling STARTTLS. It maps TLS to required STARTTLS and returns an error when the extension or handshake fails. It retains implicit TLS for SSL. The new tests cover these modes, including no STARTTLS for NONE and no plaintext authentication before secure SMTP. No concrete coding requirement from #404 remains unmet.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The SMTP implementation and protocol tests relate to issue #404. The migration changes do not. The PR renumbers the Slack integration migration from 000013 to 000014, while issue #404 concerns SMTP security behavior. The repository evidence shows the migration files as a separate change with no connection to email security.
Resolution
Remove the Slack migration renumbering from this pull request, or move it to a separate pull request linked to the migration issue that requires it.

Make the renamed Slack migration idempotent.
apps/api/cmd/api/main.go calls RunMigrations at startup, and RunMigrations executes m.Up(). An earlier release could have applied the Slack migration as version 13 before the cancelled-state migration also used version 13. After this rename, version 14 is pending, so it can execute CREATE TABLE slack_channel_links again and fail because the table already exists. The failed migration can leave the database dirty and block later upgrades.

Add a new migration that corrects canceled state groups for installations upgraded from the Slack-only tree.
Installations upgraded from commit 38e621c skip the cancelled-state correction. Their existing default Cancelled states keep the misspelled canceled group. Renaming the Slack migration to 000014 does not run that correction, because the database is already at version 13.
Auto-close, auto-archive, and progress charts only match cancelled. Affected projects therefore keep the bugs that migration 000013_fix_cancelled_state_group fixes.
A new idempotent migration runs on both upgrade paths. Rows already set to cancelled are not changed.

Installs that applied the Slack migration as 000013 would re-run it as
000014 and fail on CREATE TABLE; use IF NOT EXISTS (the integrations
insert already uses ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING). Those installs also never
ran 000013_fix_cancelled_state_group, so re-apply that idempotent
correction as 000015.

Reviewed: SMTP security modes are now explicit and tested; no suspicious changes. Pushed a follow-up making the renumbered Slack migration idempotent (IF NOT EXISTS) and re-applying the cancelled-state fix as 000015 for installs that took the old 000013 Slack migration. Thanks!
