Why / What / How

Closes #15164.

The TypeSafe Jev blocks always call api.typesafe.ai. That's right for the hosted platform, but self-hosted installs have no way to point them at a proxy or a Jev-compatible server running on their own network.

This adds an operator setting, typesafe_api_base_url, to the backend Config, the same way other operator options like ollama_host live there. call_jev passes it to AsyncTypeSafeClient instead of DEFAULT_BASE_URL. It defaults to https://api.typesafe.ai (the SDK's DEFAULT_BASE_URL), so nothing changes unless an operator sets TYPESAFE_API_BASE_URL.

The SDK's own TYPESAFE_BASE_URL is still ignored, so test_overload_is_not_retried_and_environment_cannot_redirect_credentials passes unchanged. The new setting goes through the same validator as platform_base_url (must start with http:// or https://, trailing slash stripped).

Since the AutoPilot action supervisor also goes through call_jev, it follows the same setting.

Changes 🏗️

  • backend/util/settings.py: new Config.typesafe_api_base_url (env TYPESAFE_API_BASE_URL), added to the existing URL validator
  • backend/blocks/typesafe/_client.py: use it instead of the SDK's DEFAULT_BASE_URL
  • backend/blocks/typesafe/_client_test.py: test that the setting changes where the request goes
  • .env.default: commented-out TYPESAFE_API_BASE_URL under TYPESAFE_API_KEY

Checklist 📋

For code changes:

  • I have clearly listed my changes in the PR description
  • I have made a test plan
  • I have tested my changes according to the test plan:
    • pytest backend/blocks/typesafe: 94 passed (93 before, plus the new test)
    • black, isort, ruff and pyright clean on the changed files
    • With TYPESAFE_API_BASE_URL=http://127.0.0.1:8766, call_jev against a local Jev-compatible server (WaterSheep, which I maintain) gets answers back for choice, score and noul. My server doesn't send x-typesafe-request-id, so the result notes that, as it should
    • Without it, requests still go to https://api.typesafe.ai/v1/systemone

For configuration changes:

  • .env.default is updated or already compatible with my changes
  • docker-compose.yml is updated or already compatible with my changes
  • I have included a list of my configuration changes in the PR description (under Changes)

Self-hosted installs can set TYPESAFE_API_BASE_URL to point the Jev blocks
at a proxy or a Jev-compatible server. The default stays api.typesafe.ai and
the SDK's own TYPESAFE_BASE_URL is still ignored.

Walkthrough

The backend adds a configurable TypeSafe API base URL. Jev requests use this setting instead of the SDK default. The setting has a default URL, uses the existing URL validation, and is documented in the example environment file.

Changes

TypeSafe endpoint configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define and document the endpoint setting
autogpt_platform/backend/backend/util/settings.py, autogpt_platform/backend/.env.default
Config adds typesafe_api_base_url, defaulting to https://api.typesafe.ai. The existing validator checks this setting and removes trailing slashes. The example environment file documents the self-hosted endpoint and includes a commented-out setting example.
Use the configured URL for Jev requests
autogpt_platform/backend/backend/blocks/typesafe/_client.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/blocks/typesafe/_client_test.py
call_jev configures AsyncTypeSafeClient with settings.config.typesafe_api_base_url. A test confirms that a successful request is sent once to the configured endpoint.

Explanation

Issue #15164 requires an explicit operator endpoint for TypeSafe Jev blocks and must not allow the SDK TYPESAFE_BASE_URL to redirect requests. Config.typesafe_api_base_url uses TYPESAFE_API_BASE_URL, defaults to https://api.typesafe.ai, and uses the existing HTTP(S) URL validation. call_jev passes the setting to AsyncTypeSafeClient. The tests cover the default endpoint, SDK environment isolation, and configured endpoint routing.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to the backend configuration, TypeSafe client routing, focused TypeSafe tests, and .env.default documentation. Each change supports issue #15164. No unrelated implementation is shown.

Require HTTPS for untrusted TypeSafe endpoints.

autogpt_platform/backend/.env.default permits plain HTTP for localhost and single-host container-to-container traffic. Do not reject every non-local HTTP URL. However, the validator accepts any http:// endpoint, and call_jev passes that URL to AsyncTypeSafeClient with the API key. An endpoint reached over an untrusted network can therefore receive the key in cleartext.

Enforce the documented boundary: allow approved trusted local/container paths, but require HTTPS for other non-local endpoints. An explicit opt-in may be used for other trusted private network paths.
