ADFA-3305

Documentation served in-process now answers a Range request with a 206. ADFA-3305 turns animated GIFs into looping <video> clips, and without this some of them freeze.

Cause

For a single range it can satisfy, the WebView handles an intercepted response like this (Chromium components/embedder_support/android/util, read at WebView 155.0.8059.43):

  1. It skips the response stream to the range's first byte.
  2. It sets Content-Length to the length of the range.
  3. It reads the stream to its end.
  4. It keeps the status the response gives, which is 200 unless set.

So a ranged request got a 200 whose body began partway into the file.

On a Pixel 6 Pro, 4 of 12 converted clips froze in Help after a mid-playback re-request (bytes=32768-), but only when served in-process. Served by WebServer, which ignores Range and sends the whole file, all 12 looped.

Change

  • RangeResponse parses Range the same way Chromium does.
    • One range it can satisfy gets a 206, Content-Range, and a stream cut at the range's last byte.
    • Anything else keeps the 200 and the whole content.
    • Every in-process response now says Accept-Ranges: bytes.
  • The in-process totals that HelpActivity logs now count what a 206 sends, not the whole row, and leave out a request the WebView fails.
  • WebServer is unchanged. Ignoring Range is valid HTTP.

Review by commit:

  • 8c334df: Range support.
  • 322da9b: byte count.
  • 25b11e9: a Robolectric test of what intercept() hands the WebView (CodeRabbit's nitpick).
  • 803c30e: a range the WebView rejects counts as nothing sent, plus a test for bytes=+5- and a KDoc order fix (review).
  • 2652816: docs/process/learnings.md and the interceptor KDoc brought up to date (review).
  • 9060202: tests for a one-byte range, a blank item and two more rejected headers; a request the WebView fails is no longer counted (independent review).

Testing

Unit tests (:common:testV8DebugUnitTest): RangeResponseTest (12), DocumentationRequestInterceptorTest (12) and DocumentationRequestInterceptorResponseTest (2) pass, as does the full :common suite (221 tests).

  • The range tests model the WebView's skip-then-read behavior.
  • The response test builds the framework's real WebResourceResponse under Robolectric. It adds libs.tests.robolectric to :common's test dependencies directly, because projects.testing.unit depends on :common.
  • That test turns off Robolectric's Conscrypt. Left on, Robolectric installs Conscrypt as the JVM's first security provider and never removes it, and SelfSignedCertTest, run later in the same JVM, then fails.
  • Each new test fails with the old code (mutation checks).

Phone test (Pixel 6 Pro, Android 17, WebView 155, :app:assembleV8Debug), with the converted database from appdevforall/OfflineDocumentationTools#38:

  • All 12 clips on 6 pages looped through 60 s windows. That includes two runs each of the 4 that froze before.
  • All 44 Range requests got a 206, and the response headers matched the expected values exactly.
  • Help, a tooltip and its linked page work as before.
  • This ran at 2652816. 9060202 changes only the log counter and tests, so it was not rerun.

No screen changed, so there was no font-scale check.

This must ship before the converted database (appdevforall/OfflineDocumentationTools#38). With a build that lacks it, 4 of the converted clips freeze.

For a single range, the WebView skips an intercepted response's stream
to the range's first byte and reads it to the end, whatever the
response says, and keeps the response's own status: 200 unless set. So
the in-process path answered a ranged request with a 200 whose body
began mid-file. On a Pixel 6 Pro (WebView 155), four converted <video>
clips froze after a re-request during playback when served in-process,
and looped when served by WebServer, which ignores Range and sends the
whole file.

RangeResponse parses the header as Chromium does (read at
155.0.8059.43) and answers one satisfiable range with a 206,
Content-Range, and a stream cut at the range's last byte. Anything else
keeps the 200 and the whole content. Every in-process response now
carries Accept-Ranges: bytes.

Unit-tested against a model of the WebView's skip-then-read; not yet
run on a device.

The in-process totals HelpActivity logs, and the per-request debug
line, counted every response as its whole row. For a 206 the WebView
sends only the range: on the phone, a 100-byte probe of the 1.2 MB
bubble clip was logged as 1,246,821 bytes.

Counting moves from contentFor to a new replyFor, which knows the
range answer; RangeResponse gains sentLength. The debug line now reads
"Served '<path>' in-process, <sent> of <total> bytes."

📝 Summary
  • In-process documentation responses now support one satisfiable byte range. They return 206 Partial Content, Content-Range, and a stream limited to the requested range. Responses include Accept-Ranges: bytes.
  • Requests without a range or with multiple ranges return 200 OK with the full content. For malformed or unsatisfiable ranges, the interceptor returns 200, but the WebView rejects the request before sending content. The request and byte totals do not count rejected requests. For 206 responses, the byte total counts only the range bytes.
  • WebServer behavior is unchanged. It ignores Range and returns the full file.
  • The author reports that 12 RangeResponseTest tests, 11 DocumentationRequestInterceptorTest tests, and 2 response tests pass. The author also reports that the full :common suite passes with 220 tests. On a Pixel 6 Pro with Android 17 and WebView 155, all 44 Range requests and 12 converted clips worked.
  • Risk: Reported device validation covers WebView 155 only. No font-scale check was performed because no screen changed.

The documentation request interceptor now handles eligible single byte-range requests. It returns range-aware responses and counts the bytes sent. Tests cover range parsing, response construction, and interceptor behavior.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 90602

This change makes in-process documentation responses answer a satisfiable single Range request with a 206, and it keeps other requests on the full 200 response. The supplied tests cover parsing, response construction, and byte accounting. No concrete merge-blocking risk remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 90602

The change remains confined to documentation responses and preserves existing request-admission and content-selection controls. No new privilege or data-access path was identified. Residual risk concerns compatibility with WebView's range processing, which the response implementation relies on.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior is bounded to documentation content already returned by the shared content source for intercepted WebView requests. Range values can alter response shape, but do not grant access to additional paths, databases, or privileged operations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The base-to-head comparison preserves the GET, localhost:6174, eligible-path, developer-endpoint exclusion, and successful-lookup gates. Range processing occurs downstream of these gates, and declined requests retain their existing fallback behavior.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Diagnostic totals are updated before response construction and consumption, so cancellation, partial consumption, or later failure cannot reconcile them to completed delivery. This timing predates the PR. AtomicLong updates preserve individual counter increments, but not a compound snapshot of requests and bytes; the totals are process-cumulative diagnostics, not security enforcement.

Cover the intercept response path for ranged requests.

The new test calls replyFor, so it does not execute intercept or the WebResourceResponse constructor. RangeResponseTest checks the calculated headers and lengths, but it uses a separate ByteArrayInputStream. A regression in forwarding 206, Content-Range, or reply.streamLength to WebResourceResponse can therefore pass the current tests while affecting the reachable HelpActivity WebView callback.

Add a framework-backed test that calls intercept with Range: bytes=1-2 and asserts the returned response status, Content-Range, and data length/content.

The range tests stopped at replyFor, so nothing checked that the 206,
its headers and the cut stream reach the WebResourceResponse - the step
that failed on the phone (CodeRabbit, PR #2158). The new test builds
the framework's real response under Robolectric, from the catalog entry
the other modules use; :common cannot take it through
projects.testing.unit, which depends on :common.

The test turns Robolectric's Conscrypt off. Left on, Robolectric
installs Conscrypt as the JVM's first security provider and does not
remove it, and SelfSignedCertTest, run later in the same JVM, failed:
its parsed notBefore came back 198 days off under a Thai default
locale. The full :common suite passes with it off (219 tests).

A malformed or unsatisfiable Range makes the WebView fail the request
before it sends anything, but RangeResponse answered it like "no
range": a whole-row 200, counted in full in the in-process totals.
Several ranges, which the WebView does ignore and send in full, now
stay apart from those. Also tests that a plus sign reads as the WebView
reads it, and corrects the KDoc's order: the WebView applies the
response's status and headers before it reads the stream, not after.

From review of PR #2158.

learnings.md still said our handler ignores Range and returns the
whole body, which was never quite right - the WebView cuts the stream
to the range itself - and is now wrong. The interceptor's KDoc said
every Range request gets a 206; only a single satisfiable one does.

Checked and found correct

  • Parser: a copy of RangeResponse, compiled and run on 31 edge cases, matches Chromium 155.0.8059.43's ParseRangeHeader and ComputeBounds. The cases covered:
    • + and - signs, the -1 sentinel, and overflow;
    • suffix ranges and huge suffixes;
    • whitespace, case, and empty items;
    • content of length 0 and 1.
  • Stream: the stream cut and the WebView's Content-Length agree, and the status and headers are applied in the order described.
  • Code: the counters are atomic. intercept()'s Throwable catch covers the new code. HelpActivity, FAQActivity and IDETooltipWebViewFragment need no change.
  • Tests: the full :common suite passes, 220 of 220.
  • Certificate dates on a phone (Pixel 6 Pro, Android 17): the platform Conscrypt parses the same dates under Thai, Buddhist, Japanese and Persian default locales, because Calendar.getInstance() stays Gregorian on Android. The SelfSignedCertTest failure under Robolectric's Conscrypt only happens on the desktop JVM.

CodeRabbit's nitpick on DocumentationRequestInterceptorTest.kt:145-155 (cover intercept for a ranged request) was answered by 25b11e9, which added DocumentationRequestInterceptorResponseTest. It calls intercept with Range: bytes=1-2 and asserts the 206, Accept-Ranges and Content-Range: bytes 1-2/6, and a stream that stops at the range, through the framework's real WebResourceResponse. That reply was missing here until now.

Independent review

An independent Claude Code review covered this PR at 2652816. It has no critical, high or medium findings, 1 low and 2 nits. The parser, the stream cut and the headers match the WebView's handling as far as I could check them, and the PR body's numbers hold up; the gaps are tests that do not pin two guards against the mid-file 200 this PR fixes. All are open.

ID Sev File:line Finding
R2158-01 low RangeResponse.kt:76,119 Two guards against a mid-file 200 can be broken with every test passing
R2158-02 nit RangeResponse.kt:103,106 Two parser rules that only change the byte count have no test
R2158-03 nit DocumentationRequestInterceptor.kt:109 A request the WebView fails still counts as a served request

R2158-01.

  • Reproduced: Each mutant below passes all 71 com.itsaky.androidide.documentation.* tests:
    • M09: .map { it.trimLws() } -> .map { it } (line 76). bytes=10-19, then keeps the blank item " ", parseRange rejects it, and of() returns the whole-content 200. The WebView skips the blank item, as this code models it, takes 10-19, skips 10 bytes and reads to the end: a 200 that starts mid-file, the ADFA-3305 bug.
    • M06: last >= first -> last > first (line 119). bytes=5-5 is then rejected here but accepted by the WebView, with the same result.
    • These cases pass on 2652816 and kill M06 and M09 respectively:
      assertPartial("bytes=5-5", 5, 5)
      assertPartial("bytes=10-19, ", 10, 19)
  • Cause: The test named "blanks and empty items are skipped" covers an empty item (bytes=10-19,) and blanks inside a range, but not a blank item. No test uses a one-byte range.
  • Suggested fix: Add the two cases, e.g. to the unit is matched regardless of case... and a closed range delivers no bytes past its end.

R2158-02.

  • Reproduced: Two more mutants pass all 71 tests:
    • M08: drop .takeIf { it.isValid } (line 103). bytes=0-9,9-0 then counts as the whole row instead of 0. Chromium rejects that header, because it checks IsValid() on each item.
    • M10: trim(' ', '\t') -> trim() (line 106). bytes=5-\u000b then gets a 206 and counts 995 bytes. Chromium's TrimLWS trims only space and tab, so it rejects that header.
    • Both change only the in-process byte count, since the WebView fails these requests. These cases pass on 2652816 and kill M08 and M10 respectively:
      assertThat(RangeResponse.of("bytes=0-9,9-0", content.size).sentLength).isEqualTo(0)
      assertThat(RangeResponse.of("bytes=5-\u000b", content.size).sentLength).isEqualTo(0)
  • Cause: The rejected-header test has no multi-range header with a parseable but invalid item, and no whitespace other than space and tab.
  • Suggested fix: Add both values to the list in a range the WebView rejects gets a 200 and counts as nothing sent.

R2158-03.

  • Reproduced: A probe test calling replyFor with Range: bytes=99- on the 4-byte fixture got servedSummary() = 1 requests, 0 bytes served in-process. By the code, the debug line for it reads Served '...' in-process, 0 of 4 bytes.
  • Cause: replyFor increments servedRequests before it knows whether the WebView will fail the request. 803c30e set the bytes for such a request to 0 but left the request count.
  • Suggested fix: Skip the request count for a rejected range (e.g. a rejected flag on RangeResponse), or say in the servedSummary KDoc that the count includes requests the WebView fails.

Checked and found correct

  • Parser: traced against Chromium's HttpUtil::ParseRangeHeader and HttpByteRange::ComputeBounds, from memory of the source (see Not verified). Case and LWS around the unit, empty items, +, the -1 sentinel, Long overflow, a suffix longer than the content, a first byte at or past the end, last before first, and -0 all match. toLongOrNull accepts everything StringToInt64 accepts, and more, so the code never rejects a range the WebView accepts, which is the direction that would cause a mid-file 200. Chromium's quote handling in ValuesIterator changes no outcome, because an item with a quote fails the number parse on both sides.
  • Stream cut: the WebView sizes the content by the stream's available(), and for every range shape streamLength gives it the same bounds as Content-Range: last + 1 for a closed range, the whole length for open, suffix and past-the-end ranges.
  • Overflow: length is an Int, the bounds are Long, and both toInt() calls are bounded by length.
  • Status and reason: the SDK 28 WebResourceResponse class accepts 100 to 599 except 300 to 399, with a non-empty ASCII reason, so "200 OK" and "206 Partial Content" pass. Robolectric 4.11.1 has no shadow for the class, so the response test runs the real check.
  • 416, multiple ranges, HEAD: the WebView fails an unsatisfiable range before it reads the status, so a 416 would not reach the page. Several ranges get the whole content, which is what the WebView sends for them. HEAD is declined as non-GET and still falls through to WebServer, unchanged.
  • Mutation: 28 mutants of RangeResponse and the interceptor; 22 killed, including every interceptor mutant (status, reason, headers, stream cut, byte count, header-name case). M14 (drop !isValid -> null in boundsWithin) and M15 (build ByteRange(first = -1) for bytes=-) are equivalent, because parseRange already filters invalid ranges. The other four are R2158-01 and R2158-02.
  • CodeRabbit's nitpick (test intercept() for a ranged request): 25b11e9 answers it. Its test kills the status, reason, headers and stream-cut mutants.
  • Siblings: DocumentationRequestInterceptor.response is the only WebResourceResponse builder in the repo. HelpActivity, FAQActivity and IDETooltipWebViewFragment all go through intercept(). WebServer.kt has no Range code, as the docs say. docs/process/retrospective.md:161 still says "no 206", but it is a dated retro record.
  • PR body and docs: the test counts (12, 11 and 2) and the full :common suite (220 of 220) match a run at 2652816. Removing @ConscryptMode fails SelfSignedCertTest by -17,134,675,200 ms (198.3 days), as 25b11e9 says. testing/unit declares api(projects.common), as the common/build.gradle.kts comment says. docs/documentation-database.md and docs/process/learnings.md match the code.

Not verified:

  • The Chromium behaviour the design rests on: the skip to the first byte, Content-Length taken from the range, status and headers applied as given, malformed and unsatisfiable ranges failed, and content sized by available(). I checked it from memory of the source, since no copy was at hand and this review fetched nothing.
  • WebView versions other than 155. Offline users may keep an old WebView.
  • The phone results in the PR body: 4 of 12 clips, 44 Range requests, bytes=32768-, and the 1,246,821-byte log line.
  • Whether the player now sends more range requests. Each one decodes the whole row, up to 8.8 MB, with no cache. This PR does not change that per-request cost.
  • Whether the player cancels open-ended requests. If it does, sentLength counts the whole range when the request is intercepted, so the in-process total is an upper bound.

From the independent review of PR #2158:
- R2158-01: tests for a one-byte range (bytes=5-5) and a blank item
after a range (bytes=10-19, ). Without either guard the request got a
200 that the WebView cuts mid-file, the bug this PR fixes.
- R2158-02: the rejected-range test now holds a multi-range header with
an invalid item (bytes=0-9,9-0) and whitespace other than space and
tab (bytes=5- then a vertical tab), both of which the WebView fails.
- R2158-03: a range the WebView fails is flagged rejected, and is no
longer counted as a served request.

Breaking each guard fails the test named for it: a one-byte range
refused, items left untrimmed, an invalid item kept, all whitespace
trimmed, a rejected range not flagged, a rejected range still counted.

Response to the independent review

ID Status What changed
R2158-01 Fixed in 9060202 Tests for bytes=5-5 and bytes=10-19,
R2158-02 Fixed in 9060202 bytes=0-9,9-0 and bytes=5- plus a vertical tab added to the rejected-range test
R2158-03 Fixed in 9060202 A range the WebView fails is flagged rejected and no longer counted as a served request

Checks:

  • RangeResponseTest (12), DocumentationRequestInterceptorTest (12) and DocumentationRequestInterceptorResponseTest (2) pass, as does the full :common suite (221 tests). spotlessApply changes nothing.
  • Breaking each guard fails the test named for it. The 6 mutants:
    • last >= first -> last > first;
    • items left untrimmed;
    • an invalid item kept;
    • trim() for trim(' ', '\t');
    • a rejected range not flagged;
    • a rejected range still counted.
  • The response handed to the WebView is unchanged, so the phone test at 2652816 was not rerun.
