fix(player): play and seek YouTube from the media URL - #673
Each seek in a YouTube or YouTube Music track took 5 to 6 s. SeekYTDL rebuilt the whole yt-dlp | ffmpeg pipe, so every seek paid a full yt-dlp extraction (about 5 s with cookies_from set, since yt-dlp then walks the signed-in clients and solves the JS challenge). The pipe then downloaded the track from its start while ffmpeg -ss discarded input up to the target, so a far seek in a long mix also waited for the download to catch up.
A YouTube track now plays from its direct media URL. The one yt-dlp run that starts the track prints the URL, the request headers and the duration of the same format (--print duration --print urls --print %(http_headers)j), and the pipeline keeps them. ffmpeg opens the URL, and a seek reopens it with -ss before -i, so ffmpeg requests the byte range of the target. No seek runs yt-dlp while the URL is valid.
Measured on YouTube Music tracks with cookies_from set, time until the pipeline has audio:
Before
After
Start (2 tracks, 6 runs each)
4.9 s average
5.2 s average
First seek
5.5 to 6.2 s
120 ms
Later seeks
5.5 to 6.2 s each
120 to 135 ms
The start costs about 0.3 s more because ffmpeg opens its own connection after yt-dlp exits, where the pipe streamed while yt-dlp was still running. A track with no known duration also drops the separate probeYTDLDuration run, since the resolve reports the duration.
The yt-dlp | ffmpeg pipe stays the fallback:
Scope: only YouTube and YouTube Music pages (playlist.IsYouTubeURL / IsYouTubeMusicURL). SoundCloud, Bandcamp, Bilibili and Mixcloud keep the pipe for playback and seeks. Mixcloud limits seeking on its own player, and docs/mixcloud.md describes the pipe behavior.
No direct format: separate video and audio URLs mark the track, and its seeks use the pipe without resolving again. The HLS URL of a live stream counts as direct: ffmpeg opens it, so the start runs yt-dlp once.
Failed resolve: when yt-dlp itself fails on the page (a dead video, a timeout), the start or seek returns its error without a second run, since the pipe would repeat the same extraction. A 403 still goes to the pipe, which retries it.
Expiry: the kept URL is used until a minute before its expire parameter. A kept URL that fails is resolved again on the next seek. A URL that fails right after it was resolved switches the track to the pipe, so a seek never pays for a resolve, a failed read and the pipe every time.
Headers: the User-Agent goes to -user_agent and the rest to -headers. A header containing CR or LF is dropped. ffmpeg gets -reconnect, because it now owns the HTTP read that yt-dlp owned before.
player/ytdl_media.go holds the new code. The other files change only where it hooks in: buildYTDLSource sends YouTube pages to buildYTDLDirectSource (the old body is now buildYTDLPipeSource), SeekYTDL calls buildYTDLSeekPipeline, startFFmpegPipe gained an args variant for input options before -i, and the format selector became the shared constant ytdlAudioFormat.

N/A: playback-only change.
How to test
Set [ytmusic] cookies_from (or use OAuth) and play a YouTube Music track.
Seek with Right or Shift+Right, from the first seek on: audio resumes at the new position within a fraction of a second.
Play a Mixcloud show and seek: unchanged, through the pipe.
go test ./player -run 'YTDLMedia|DirectSeek|YTDLSeek|YTDLSource|FailedResolve|Resolve403' runs the new tests. They cover the --print parsing (duration, expire, User-Agent split, CR/LF headers, HLS, split formats, non-http schemes), the start from the URL with no yt-dlp run on the first seek, the URL reuse across seeks, the fallbacks at start and at seek, the re-resolve of a failed kept URL, a failed resolve at start and at seek, and the Mixcloud exclusion. The process tests use fake yt-dlp and ffmpeg scripts, as the existing retry tests do.
Verified on Linux (NixOS) with yt-dlp 2026.07.04 and ffmpeg 8.1.2. The live stream start was checked with yt-dlp 2026.08.19 and ffmpeg 9.0.1.
Checklist
make check passes (also go test -race ./player/ and staticcheck v0.6.1)
docs/ and site/index.html updated for user-facing changes (none needed: no key, config or provider changes, and the docs do not describe YouTube seek timing)
YouTube and YouTube Music tracks can seek using a direct media stream when one is available.
If a direct stream is unavailable or fails, playback falls back to the standard streaming method. Other yt-dlp-supported sites continue using the existing method.
When a previously resolved media link stops working, a later seek can resolve a fresh link and continue playback.
A seek in a YouTube or YouTube Music track restarted the whole
yt-dlp | ffmpeg pipe. Every seek paid a full yt-dlp extraction, about
5 s with browser cookies, and the pipe then downloaded the track from
its start while ffmpeg discarded input up to the target.
The first seek now asks yt-dlp for the direct media URL and request
headers of the same format, and the pipeline keeps them. ffmpeg opens
the URL with -ss before -i, so it requests the byte range of the
target. Later seeks reuse the URL until a minute before its expire
time and cost one ffmpeg start. The pipe stays the fallback: for HLS
or split formats, when a fresh URL cannot be read, and for every
other yt-dlp site. Mixcloud limits seeking on its own player, and its
docs describe the pipe behavior.
Measured on a YouTube Music track with cookies: a seek took 6.2 s
before. After, the first seek takes 5.5 s and later seeks 120-135 ms.
Verified with make check (fmt, vet, tests), go test -race ./player/
and staticcheck v0.6.1.

The player resolves direct media for eligible YouTube and YouTube Music pages during source creation and seeks. It passes media headers and seek offsets to FFmpeg, reuses resolved URLs when usable, and falls back to the yt-dlp pipe when direct media is unavailable or fails.
Changes: Direct-media playback and seeking
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Resolve and parse direct-media metadata player/ffmpeg.go, player/ytdl.go, player/ytdl_media.go, player/ytdl_media_test.go
The resolver uses the configured audio format and parses media URLs, headers, expiry, and duration. FFmpeg input arguments support headers and seek offsets. Tests cover parsing, expiry, and argument construction.
Route source creation through direct media player/pipeline.go, player/ytdl.go, player/ytdl_media.go, player/ytdl_media_test.go
Eligible pages use direct media for source creation when available. Other pages and unavailable media use the yt-dlp pipe. Tests cover source selection, errors, and fallback.
Handle seeks and direct-read failures player/pipeline.go, player/player.go, player/ytdl_media.go, player/ytdl_media_test.go
Seek pipelines reuse or resolve media and fall back to the pipe when needed. The player records failed direct reads and uses pipe playback on a later restart. Tests cover URL reuse, seek fallback, and restart behavior.

Explanation
The title "fix(player): play and seek YouTube from the media URL" matches the main change. The PR makes YouTube and YouTube Music playback and seeking use a direct media URL resolved by yt-dlp, instead of rerunning yt-dlp on each seek. The changeset covers ytdl_media.go, pipeline.go, player.go, ytdl.go, and tests for these paths. The title is concise and specific. It omits the fallback behavior and the non-YouTube pipe path, which is acceptable because the title need not cover every detail.

The first seek in a YouTube track still ran yt-dlp, because the track
started on the yt-dlp | ffmpeg pipe and only a seek resolved the
direct media URL.
A YouTube or YouTube Music track now starts on the direct URL: one
yt-dlp run resolves the URL, the request headers and the duration,
and ffmpeg opens the URL. The pipeline holds the URL from the start,
so the first seek costs one ffmpeg start too. The same run reports
the duration, so a track with no known duration needs no separate
probe run. The pipe stays the fallback when the page has no direct
format or the direct read fails, and other yt-dlp sites keep it.
Measured on two YouTube Music tracks with cookies, 6 runs each: the
start takes 5.2 s on average against 4.9 s for the pipe, since
ffmpeg opens its own connection after yt-dlp exits. The first seek
falls from about 5.5 s to 120 ms.
Verified with make check (fmt, vet, tests), go test -race ./player/
and staticcheck v0.6.1.

A direct media read that failed mid-track made tickReconnect restart
the page from the direct URL again, so the failure could repeat with
no fallback to the yt-dlp pipe.
Player.Stop now reads the stream error before it interrupts the
pipeline. When the pipeline read the direct URL, it records the page,
and buildYTDLSource starts that page through the pipe with
ytdlNoDirect set. A table-driven test covers a failed direct read, a
clean stop and a failed pipe. Verified with make check (fmt, vet,
tests) and staticcheck.

Thanks for this. The seek speedup is clear, and the tests cover the fallbacks well. I have 2 questions before we merge:
buildYTDLDirectSource in player/ytdl_media.go: a dead video or a live stream now runs yt-dlp twice at start. Can you avoid the second run? For example, return a permanent resolve error, and let ffmpeg open the HLS URL of a live stream.
Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review. I’m so glad to read that.
Agreed. An implicit retry hides the failure, so I'd rather make it explicit: return a permanent resolve error that the caller can act on, instead of falling through to the pipe and running yt-dlp again. A live stream will go to ffmpeg with its HLS URL. I'll push a fix to this PR.
A dead video or a live stream ran yt-dlp again at start. Any failed
resolve fell through to the pipe, which repeats the same extraction, and
an HLS URL was treated as a format ffmpeg could not open.
A resolve that yt-dlp itself fails now returns its error, at start and at
seek. A 403 still goes to the pipe, which retries it, and so does a
missing yt-dlp, which the pipe reports with the install hint. The HLS URL
of a live stream now goes to ffmpeg.
Verified with make check, go test -race ./player/ and staticcheck v0.6.1.
On a real live stream, the pipeline read 45 s of audio with no stream
error. The new tests fail on the previous code.

Fixed in 9b9707e. A resolve that yt-dlp itself fails now returns its error at start, and at seek too, since the same second run was there. A 403 still goes to the pipe for its retries. The HLS URL of a live stream now goes to ffmpeg, so the start runs yt-dlp once.
