Walkthrough

The screen API adds setters for terminal default foreground and background colors. The terminfo screen stores these colors and emits set or reset sequences during updates and screen lifecycle changes.

Changes: Terminal Default Colors

Layer / File(s) Summary
Screen color API
screen.go
The Screen and internal screenImpl interfaces add foreground and background color setters.
Color output and lifecycle
tscreen.go, tscreen_test.go
The terminfo screen stores the colors, emits valid colors when engaged or set while running, and resets valid colors during disengagement. Tests cover escape sequences, suspend and resume, finalization, and resetting a color during suspension.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Comment thread tscreen.go Resolved
Once disengageStart clears running, the color setters stop writing to
the terminal. disengageFinish then read the colors without the lock, so
a setter that cleared a color in between skipped the reset, and the
terminal kept the custom color. Send the resets from disengageStart,
under the same lock that clears running.

How widely supported are these? I've been avoiding things that mess about with the palette -- arguably you can just force colors using 24-bit color and clear the screen, without changing the defaults, so that when the screen resets it goes back without having to restore the palette. (Given that, why do you want this?)

@ayn2op I'd like to understand the problem that this solves for you (as opposed to setting the colors explicitly before doing screen.Clear() ? The change here affects all apps, not just the tcell app.

Why not a Style + Clear()? That covers the cell grid, but not:

  • Padding/margins: the area the terminal draws around the grid uses its default background, so a themed app gets a mismatched border. Most visible in terminals with window padding, like kitty, ghostty and WezTerm.
  • Child processes: with Suspend to run $EDITOR or a shell, the default colors stay with the app's theme only if they're set at the terminal level.

Affecting other apps: agreed, this is the main risk, so the PR resets both colors (OSC 110/111) on Suspend and Fini and sets them again on Resume. It only does this when the app has actually set a color, so apps that never call these methods send nothing. CodeRabbit found a race where a reset could be skipped during suspend; that's fixed and tested in e047ed2. This is the same approach tcell already takes for the cursor color, which uses OSC 12/112 (tscreen.go:663). The one gap is a crash or SIGKILL, which skips the reset, but that also leaves the alt screen, mouse mode and the cursor color behind today.

OSC 10/11/110/111 are xterm sequences. I've tested kitty, ghostty, WezTerm, and a few others. Terminals that don't support them ignore them.
