Create an individual square grid cell by specifying its size, position, and coordinate reference system. Cells are bounded by the coordinate system’s area of use and include an identifier.
Generate a global collection of square grid cells in a chosen coordinate reference system. Cells include identifiers and an estimated equator cell width.
Grid generation can be computationally expensive; exporting the collection before further processing is recommended.
The change adds FeatureAccessor.cell to create an indexed cell and FeatureCollectionAccessor.grid to create a grid collection in a requested CRS. Both use CRS area-of-use bounds from pyproj. The change adds tests and a runtime dependency.
Changes: CRS Grid APIs
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Create one indexed grid cell geetools/ee_feature.py, pyproject.toml, tests/test_Feature.py
FeatureAccessor.cell creates a rectangular feature using CRS bounds, size, and cell indices. The feature ID includes the CRS, size, and indices. Tests cover default and custom indices, cell size, bounds clamping, and projected and polar CRS inputs.
Build the grid collection geetools/ee_feature_collection.py, tests/test_FeatureCollection.py, tests/test_FeatureCollection/serialized_test_split.yml
FeatureCollectionAccessor.grid builds a collection from CRS bounds and cell coordinates. Each feature has a formatted ID and an equator_cell_size_m property. Tests cover geographic, projected, and polar CRS inputs. The serialized fixture changes the split-count expression to convert the sum to an integer.

gee-community/geetools#508: Both PRs change the split-count expression in the same serialized test fixture.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 33580
Some CRS inputs can still produce incomplete grids, and invalid cell indexes can fail during geometry construction. These correctness risks should be addressed before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 33580
The new APIs construct grid geometries without adding credential management or automatic asset writes. No concrete security vulnerability was established in the inspected changes. Downstream exposure to untrusted callers and third-party runtime behavior remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The directly supported execution scope is the invoking Python process and the Earth Engine expressions it evaluates or constructs. The supplied relationships establish dependency and test impact, not remote-user reachability, cross-tenant access, or additional service authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Caller-supplied CRS values cross from Earth Engine evaluation into local pyproj processing. Grid size also crosses through getInfo into local arithmetic. These methods do not introduce a separate identity or authorization mechanism; authentication and any downstream input-admission policy are outside the inspected bodies.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Grid workload grows with the product of the two axis cell counts. The implementation warns about cost but does not impose a total-cell budget. This matters to failure containment if a downstream service exposes size selection to untrusted users; such exposure and effective quotas were not established here.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If these APIs are exposed through a shared service, reject nonpositive or nonfinite sizes and enforce an estimated total-cell budget before evaluation, with limits tied to the invoking account or project. This is a conditional hardening proposal, not a verified vulnerability.

- Around line 45-46: Update the bounds calculations used by cell and
FeatureCollectionAccessor.grid to use Transformer.transform_bounds on the full
area-of-use extent instead of transforming only the southwest and northeast
corners. Use the resulting outer projected bounds to preserve complete grid
coverage for nonlinear projections.
- Around line 48-49: Update the bounds handling in `cell` to preserve `x_min`,
`y_min`, `x_max`, and `y_max` as doubles instead of casting them with
`toFloat()`, and keep double precision throughout the corresponding grid
calculation.
- Around line 50-51: Replace the full-range ee.List.sequence calls used to build
longitudes and latitudes with direct boundary calculations from the requested ix
and iy indices and cell size. Clamp each final boundary to the corresponding CRS
maximum so creating a single cell does not generate the full coordinate
sequence.

- Line 56: Update the bounds handling around `transformer.transform_bounds` to
detect antimeridian-wrapped results where `x_max < x_min`, split the bounds at
the antimeridian, and generate grid cells across both segments with indexes
consistent with `FeatureAccessor.cell`.
- Line 56: Update the bounds calculation around transformer.transform_bounds to
include transformed cardinal extrema, including longitude 0 for EPSG:3031, so
y_min captures the true polar minimum and the generated grid includes the outer
polar band.
- Around line 59-61: Update the equator_cell_size calculation in the grid flow
so polar CRS inputs such as EPSG:3031 do not produce a zero width from two
points that transform to the same longitude. Calculate a meaningful cell width
for the CRS, or mark equator_cell_size_m unavailable when it cannot be
calculated.
Review comments at @geetools/ee_feature.py:
- Line 45: Update the bounds handling in cell and FeatureCollectionAccessor.grid
to account for antimeridian-wrapped results from transform_bounds, where the
right longitude is less than the left. Normalize or split wrapped bounds so both
methods can generate the requested cells without clamping the right edge to a
smaller longitude.
- Line 45: Constrain the pyproj dependency declaration to version 3.1 or later
so the transform_bounds call used by cell is available; leave the bounds
transformation logic unchanged.

Prevent out-of-range indexes from creating invalid bounds.
For a positive size, a negative index places the lower edge below the CRS minimum. An index beyond the CRS maximum places the lower edge above the maximum, while the upper edge remains clamped to the maximum. ee.Geometry.Rectangle can therefore receive bounds outside the CRS area or reversed bounds, causing invalid cell construction. This defect is independent of antimeridian handling.
Clamp the lower edges to the CRS bounds, or reject indexes outside the grid before constructing the rectangle.
