Description

Fixes #2105

When setting FLAGD_PORT (or other service ports like management, sync, ofrep) to a non-numeric string (e.g. FLAGD_PORT=abc, or Kubernetes injected service link URLs like FLAGD_PORT=tcp://10.0.0.1:8015), Viper's GetUint16 delegating to cast.ToUint16 silently swallowed parsing errors and returned 0. This caused flagd to bind to an ephemeral OS port 0 rather than failing fast with an informative error.

Changes

  • Implemented getPort(flagName string) (uint16, error) in flagd/cmd/start.go using cast.ToUint16E and bounds checking against math.MaxUint16 to parse values from environment/flags, verifying that values are numeric and strictly within valid TCP port range [0, 65535].
  • Applied getPort validation to portFlagName, managementPortFlagName, ofrepPortFlagName, and syncPortFlagName in startCmd, terminating with log.Fatal if an invalid port is configured.
  • Added comprehensive unit tests in flagd/cmd/start_test.go covering default ports, valid numeric overrides, non-numeric strings, URLs, out-of-range values, and negative ports.

Testing

  • Unit tests: go test -v ./flagd/cmd/... (PASS)
  • Package build: go build ./flagd/... (PASS)
  • Flagd tests: go test ./flagd/... (PASS)

Walkthrough

The start command now validates the management, OFREP, service, and sync ports before runtime construction. It stops startup when a port value is invalid or out of range. The runtime configuration uses the parsed values.

Changes: Port validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Port parsing and startup validation
flagd/cmd/start.go, flagd/cmd/start_test.go
getPort parses configured values as uint16, rejects invalid types and out-of-range values, and returns a targeted error for Kubernetes service-link URLs. Startup validates all four ports before runtime construction and passes parsed values to the runtime configuration. Tests cover defaults, valid input, invalid values, and an unknown flag.

Explanation

Issue [#2105] requires flagd to avoid silently binding to port 0 for non-numeric FLAGD_* values. getPort returns errors for non-numeric values, Kubernetes tcp:// service-link URLs, negative values, and values outside the uint16 range. startCmd validates the service, management, OFREP, and sync ports before startup. Tests cover defaults, valid numeric values, invalid strings, URLs, range errors, and negative values.

Explanation

The changes are limited to flagd/cmd/start.go and flagd/cmd/start_test.go. The source changes implement the validation required by [#2105]. The tests support that implementation. No unrelated change is evident.

Reject booleans and fractional floats before conversion.

viper.Get(flagName) can return typed boolean or float values from a configuration file. In cast v1.7.1, ToUint16E(false) returns 0, and ToUint16E(0.5) truncates to 0. ToInt64E also truncates these values, so the range check accepts them.

The Int32P flags reject fractional command-line values, and environment values such as "0.5" are rejected by cast's integer parser. The remaining gap affects typed configuration-file values. A malformed configuration can therefore select port 0 instead of failing.

This is a narrow validation gap, not a major issue. Explicit port 0 already passes the range check, so the impact is limited to misinterpreting invalid typed values.

Thanks! A few small things:

  • When the value starts with tcp://, could the error mention Kubernetes service links and enableServiceLinks: false? A Service named flagd in the pod's namespace makes k8s inject FLAGD_PORT=tcp://<ip>:<port>, which collides with our --port env var, so that's where this will come from for most people. Maybe something like: invalid port value for 'port': "tcp://10.0.0.1:8015" (this can be caused by Kubernetes service links, set enableServiceLinks: false on the pod). Docs: https://kubernetes.io/docs/tutorials/services/connect-applications-service/#environment-variables
  • The test uses viper.AutomaticEnv() globally, which leaks into other tests in the package. Let's clean it up after the tests.

This also changes startup behavior (a FLAGD_PORT=tcp://... that used to run on a random port now fails), so let's mark it breaking: fix!:.

This could be simpler: one cast.ToInt64E, then a 0..65535 check, instead of the type switch.

@toddbaert
toddbaert self-requested a review October 29, 2026 17:05
When setting FLAGD_PORT (or other port variables) to a non-numeric string like abc or a Kubernetes service link URL like tcp://10.0.0.1:8015, viper.GetUint16 delegates to cast.ToUint16 which silently discards parsing errors and returns 0. This caused flagd to bind to an ephemeral OS port without error instead of failing fast.

This adds getPort validation checking cast.ToUint16E, rejecting booleans/fractional floats, detecting Kubernetes service link URLs with actionable guidance to set enableServiceLinks: false, and bounding ports to uint16 range, failing fast with an explicit validation error.

BREAKING CHANGE: Non-numeric port values like Kubernetes service links no longer silently fall back to an ephemeral port; flagd now fails fast at startup with an explicit validation error.

Thanks for the feedback @toddbaert! Updated:

  1. Port values starting with tcp:// now return: invalid port value for '<flag>': "tcp://..." (this can be caused by Kubernetes service links, set enableServiceLinks: false on the pod).
  2. Added t.Cleanup in Test_getPort to reset viper and rebind flags so viper.AutomaticEnv() does not leak into other test suites.
  3. Marked as a breaking change (fix!:) in the commit message and PR title.

Restore the package’s Viper state for future same-process tests.

viper.Reset() removes the package’s FLAGD prefix, key replacer, and root-command binding. bindFlags(startCmd.Flags()) restores only start-command flags. A later same-process test could therefore miss FLAGD_PORT or FLAGD_SYNC_PORT and use defaults. Restore the prior Viper state or isolate getPort from the global Viper instance.
