🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Do not treat a local instant variable as a route setting.
If a Payload admin layout contains const instant inside a function, declaresInstantRegex skips the loader. The route then has no exported instant = false setting, so the admin layout can retain the static-shell validation that this change intends to disable. Distinguish exported route settings from local declarations.

site:nextjs.org/docs cacheComponents instant = false connection route module opt out
💡 Result:
If you mean “make this route fully dynamic rather than prerendering an instant shell” with `cacheComponents: true`, use `connection()` in the route component before the runtime-dependent work:
```tsx
import { connection } from 'next/server'
export default async function Page() {
await connection()
// Runtime-only work here
return <main>...</main>
}
```
`connection()` opts the work after it into request-time rendering. The docs show this pattern for pages and say to use it in a Route Handler before accessing request information. ([nextjs.org](https://nextjs.org/docs/app/api-reference/functions/connection?utm_source=openai))
If you mean `export const instant = false`, I couldn’t verify that as a documented Next.js route-segment option. With Cache Components enabled, route-segment config options are disabled; `connection()` is the documented opt-in for dynamic rendering. "instant = false" Next.js 16.4.2 cacheComponents
💡 Result:
`export const instant = false` is a **route-segment setting**, not a `next.config` option. With `cacheComponents: true`, it opts that page/layout out of instant-navigation validation and indicates that navigation through the segment may block. A `false` on a layout can affect its subtree; keep it as low in the route tree as practical. ([github.com](https://github.com/vercel/next.js/blob/canary/docs/01-app/03-api-reference/03-file-conventions/02-route-segment-config/instant.mdx?utm_source=openai))
```ts
// app/account/page.tsx
export const instant = false
```
The current docs say `instant` has been available since Next.js 16.3.0, but I couldn’t verify the exact published implementation for **16.4.2** from the available sources. Handle namespace imports in instantLoader.
If an admin layout.tsx imports RootLayout through a namespace, instantLoader does not add export const instant = false. The layout then reaches connection() without the former Suspense boundary. With Cache Components enabled, Next.js can reject the route during instant-navigation validation. Cover namespace imports in the loader, or retain a Suspense boundary for layouts the loader cannot identify.

Every admin entry point (root layout, page, not-found page and server functions) goes through initAdminContext, and Next.js renders the layout, page and not-found page in parallel. A single connection() call there covers all of them. A call in the root layout alone does not: the not-found page reaches the database through its own initAdminContext call and still hits the `new Date()` prerender error. connection() changes nothing for the admin when cacheComponents is disabled (the admin is already dynamic because it reads cookies and headers), so the PAYLOAD_CACHE_COMPONENTS_ENABLED env var is no longer needed. …Loader Swaps the @babel/parser-based cacheComponentsLoader.cjs for instantLoader.js. It detects the admin entry modules by their import of RootLayout or RootPage from @payloadcms/next/layouts or @payloadcms/next/views and appends `export const instant = false`, unless the module already declares `instant`. - No new dependency: removes @babel/parser from @payloadcms/next - Plain .js, compiled by swc like the rest of withPayload, so copyfiles no longer needs to copy .cjs files - The Turbopack rule also gets a content condition, so only files that import from @payloadcms/next/layouts or /views are sent to the loader Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The separate component only existed so RootLayout could wrap the async content in <Suspense> when cacheComponents was enabled. Now that the Suspense wrapper is gone, RootLayout can be the async component itself. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

… turbopack rules Builds the Turbopack rules inline in the returned config instead of copying and mutating a separate turbopackRules object. A rule the user already has under the same glob key is still kept, in front of ours. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

Builds on #18694, which makes the admin panel render at request time when Next.js [`cacheComponents`](https://nextjs.org/docs/app/api-reference/config/next-config-js/cacheComponents) is enabled. This PR fixes what still broke with it enabled and runs all our e2e tests with cache components enabled, allowing us to guarantee support. ## What broke and how it's fixed With `cacheComponents`, **pages you leave stay mounted.** Next.js keeps the last 3 visited pages hidden inside React [`<Activity>`](https://react.dev/reference/react/Activity) boundaries, so going back can show them instantly. That caused three problems in the admin panel. ### Hidden pages keep their old state **Problem:** Hidden pages stay in the DOM, and their React state comes back when you return to them. **Fix:** - New `UnmountWhenHidden` component in the Next adapter. While a page is hidden, it renders nothing, so hidden pages don't leave old state in the DOM. It's only rendered when `cacheComponents` is on, based on `PAYLOAD_CACHE_COMPONENTS_ENABLED`, which `withPayload` sets. - It's keyed by [`useRouter().bfcacheId`](https://nextjs.org/docs/app/api-reference/functions/use-router#bfcacheid). This prevents a brief flash of a white page in between client-side navigation. ### Back/forward showed stale data **Background:** On browser back/forward, Next.js shows the page from its in-memory router cache, which can be outdated. Our existing `RouteCache` provider works around that by refreshing the page after every back/forward. **Problem:** That refresh only happened if our `popstate` listener ran before Next.js restored the page. With `cacheComponents`, Next.js restores it first, so the refresh was skipped. **Fix:** Refresh in a `setTimeout`, so it always runs after Next.js has restored the page. ### Render loop in dev **Background:** Our existing `CloseModalOnRouteChange` component closes any open modal when you navigate, so a modal doesn't stay open on the next page. **Problem:** It closed all modals every time its effect ran, assuming that only happens on a route change. With `cacheComponents`, React can re-run it without one, for example while the page is still hydrating. Even with no modal open, each "close all modals" call counted as a state change and caused another render, until React gave up with "Maximum update depth exceeded". **Fix:** Only close modals when the pathname actually changed and a modal is open. ## Docs - Removed the installation banner that said full `cacheComponents` compatibility isn't guaranteed. ## Tests & CI - **E2E tests run with `cacheComponents` on by default.** - **`@also-without-cache-components` tag:** tests with this tag also run with cache components off. One extra CI job, `E2E - all suites [next] [without cacheComponents]`, collects them from every suite. - For a short moment after each navigation (usually under ~100ms), the previous page's DOM still exists, hidden. That's how long React takes to empty a hidden page. In order for our e2e tests to pass, we have to patch some playwright page methods globally to ignore these hidden activities _Written by AI_ --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
