Summary

This PR adds a design spec and a worked example. It has no code changes.

  • docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-18-context-operations-design.md: an object model for the changes Cortex plugins make to a request (context-guru, tool-prune, and others). It also defines one context-guru library (github.com/rossoctl/context-guru/ops) that prices those changes in tokens for each billing tier. Cortex converts the tokens to dollars with its own pricing.Resolver.
  • docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-18-context-operations-example.md: one session, from the request body, to the operations, to dollars. It shows a saving across requests and the payback of a cache break.

Main decisions

  • The producer reports whether a change is applied for the first time. The library is a pure function with no state.
  • The library returns tokens for each tier, not dollars.
  • Each request lists every change in its body, fresh or replayed. The saving across requests is the sum of the per-request savings.
  • Only the Cortex collector detects a cache break. It does this by comparing fingerprints of the client and forwarded bodies. A break that no plugin caused is not charged to a plugin.

Base

The spec builds on the savings code on feat/contextguru-keepalive, which is not yet on main (§0 of the spec).

Review

Please check the decisions table (§2) and the migration steps (§9).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a design proposal for accounting for context changes as ordered operations, including cache-boundary handling, token pricing, attribution, and error outcomes.
    • Added a worked example showing how changes are evaluated across requests, how cache breaks affect savings and costs, and how results are priced.
    • These documents describe a proposed approach; they do not announce a change to existing app behavior.

Define one object model for the changes Cortex plugins make to a request,
and one context-guru library that prices them in tokens for each tier.
Cortex converts the tokens to dollars with its own rates. The model
supports savings across requests and the payback of a cache break.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a proposed design for context-operation accounting and a worked example. The documents describe operation data, collection, cache-aware token pricing, attribution, request-level accounting, failure outcomes, migration steps, and tests.

Changes: Context Operations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Operation model
docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-18-context-operations-design.md, docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-18-context-operations-example.md
The design specifies operation requirements, fields, status, and attribution. The example introduces a two-stage pipeline and explains the roles of operation fields.
Collection and cache-aware pricing
docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-18-context-operations-design.md, docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-18-context-operations-example.md
The design describes collection, cache-boundary matching, pricing tiers, and cache-break penalties. The examples calculate costs and savings across cache hits, misses, and expiration.
Accounting and outcomes
docs/superpowers/specs/2026-10-18-context-operations-design.md
The design specifies conversion to saving records, pricing failure outcomes, migration steps, and tests.

This change adds only a design proposal and does not alter running code. Before implementation, the spec should define how over-limit operations are priced and map client edit positions into forwarded positions. It should also say plainly how the savings total changes. These gaps could otherwise produce wrong cache-break attribution or wrong savings totals.

Define the pricing path for truncated operations.

RequestOps.Truncated is declared when the operation limit is exceeded, but Price accepts only Input.Ops []Operation. The specification does not define Aggregate, its conversion into priced operations, or how its totals reach Result and Saving.Changes. Define this path and add an over-limit test that checks saved, caused, and per-change totals.

Map clientFirstDiff into forwarded coordinates.

clientFirstDiff is computed on the client body, but fwdFirstDiff and B* use forwarded-body positions. R32 permits producers to insert or remove messages, so the direct comparison can misclassify a client edit as a producer cache break and select the wrong boundary and tier.

Define the client-to-forwarded mapping from the ordered Splice records. Apply it before calculating B* and before the §5.4 break classification. Add a collector test with a splice before the client diff.

`TotalAvoidedUSD` does not change: `max(0, USD − PenaltyUSD)` for each saving, floored at zero.
Signed totals are out of scope (§10).

Specify the TotalAvoidedUSD behavior change.

TotalAvoidedUSD currently sums USD for applied savings and excludes projected savings. It does not subtract PenaltyUSD. State that step 6 updates this helper while preserving the projected-savings exclusion, or define a separate net-savings total. Otherwise, the migration compares totals with different meanings.

A total for one `changeId` is a fold over the session's events: add `Changes[i]` where the
`changeId` matches. The session archive holds each request's event for the whole session, so agentop
can compute the fold when it opens a session. There is no ledger column for each change.

Exclude projected savings from per-change totals.

Section 8 says projected savings never enter totals, but this fold adds each matching Changes entry without filtering its enclosing Saving.Projected value. Skip projected records so observe-mode estimates do not appear as realized payback.

Use the documented Saved/Caused result shape in the worked example.

The example presents both snippets as library output, but uses signed tier deltas. The design defines separate non-negative Saved and Caused values. Update the example to match that contract.

Suggested fix
-op4  {cacheRead: -300}
+op4  {Caused.CacheRead: 300}
-The library output for op13: `{cacheWrite: −7950, cacheRead: +7950}`.
+The library output for op13: `{Saved.CacheRead: 7950, Caused.CacheWrite5m: 7950}`.

This is a documentation inconsistency with limited practical impact, so it is a minor issue rather than a major one.

Price tokens after the last cache breakpoint as input, and tokens
between B* and that breakpoint as cache write at its TTL. Define the
counterfactual as "this change was never made". Allow one operation for
each change unit, with spans for changes that are not contiguous, and
use it for tool-prune. State that saved tokens come from the
operation's own size. Shrink PosHash to 12 bytes so the memory estimate
holds. Define the missing types and enums, explain the withdrawn R10,
describe migration step 2 as new work, and sum the payback table from
exact values.

An operation with spans on both sides of the cache boundary needs a size
for each span, or the library cannot price each part at its own tier.
Add Before and After to Span, check that they add up to the operation's
sizes, and show the sizes in the example.
