Why / What / How

Why: Platform notifications on desktop and the PWA are generic (e.g. "AutoGPT / Task completed"). From the notification alone you can't tell what happened or who did it (SECRT-2891).

What: Every completion notification now carries rich content — a title naming the expert (or AutoPilot), a few-word body saying what happened, the expert's avatar as the icon, and a click-through to the chat. The service worker renders server-provided content for any notification type, so future publishers get rich rendering for free.

How: The backend composes display-ready title/body/icon/url at publish time in a new backend/copilot/completion_notify.py (session title + expert identity lookups, all best-effort with generic-copy fallback), forwards them through the push allowlist, and both OS surfaces (PWA service worker, desktop Notification fallback) prefer them over their hardcoded copy. Copy rules: Finished: <title>, Needs your answer: <question> when the turn ends waiting on the user, Couldn't finish: <title> on failure, generic copy when enrichment is unavailable.

Changes 🏗️

  • Backend: new completion_notify.py (content builder + best-effort publisher) and completion_notify_test.py; CopilotCompletionPayload gains optional title/body/icon/url/expert_name/session_title; stream_registry.mark_session_completed publishes via the new helper; push_sender forwards the rich fields.
  • PWA: push-sw.js merges server content over the static map (resolvePushContent), validates icon URLs (site-relative or https) and click targets (same-origin relative only).
  • Desktop fallback: useCopilotNotifications renders the payload's rich content via a new resolveCompletionNotificationContent helper; WebSocketNotification gains a typed copilot completion variant.
  • Tests: 30 new backend tests; 18 new frontend tests (SW sandbox, helpers, hook dispatch).

Checklist 📋

For code changes:

  • I have clearly listed my changes in the PR description
  • I have made a test plan
  • I have tested my changes according to the test plan:
    • Backend unit tests pass: completion_notify_test.py + push_sender_test.py + notification_bus_test.py (62 passed)
    • Frontend unit tests pass: SW helpers + copilot helpers + notification hook (121 passed)
    • tsc --noEmit clean; ESLint clean on changed files; black/isort/ruff/pyright clean on changed backend files
    • Manual: with notifications granted and the tab in the background, complete a copilot session → OS notification shows the expert name, work summary, and avatar; clicking it opens the chat (verified by reviewer — full-stack poetry run test could not complete in the agent environment, so CI is the full gate)
    • ...
Example test plan
  • Create from scratch and execute an agent with at least 3 blocks
  • Import an agent from file upload, and confirm it executes correctly
  • Upload agent to marketplace
  • Import an agent from marketplace and confirm it executes correctly
  • Edit an agent from monitor, and confirm it executes correctly

For configuration changes:

  • .env.default is updated or already compatible with my changes
  • docker-compose.yml is updated or already compatible with my changes
  • I have included a list of my configuration changes in the PR description (under Changes)
Examples of configuration changes
  • Changing ports
  • Adding new services that need to communicate with each other
  • Secrets or environment variable changes
  • New or infrastructure changes such as databases

Walkthrough

Completion notifications now carry backend-composed display content and context. The backend enriches and publishes payloads, and push serialization forwards the new fields. Copilot browser and service-worker notifications use supplied content with validation and fallbacks.

Changes

Copilot completion notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Backend notification composition and publishing
autogpt_platform/backend/backend/api/model.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/completion_notify.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/completion_notify_test.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/stream_registry.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/copilot/stream_registry_test.py
Completion payloads add optional display and context fields. The backend composes content, enriches payloads, validates avatar URLs, and logs lookup or publish failures. The session registry calls the publisher for sessions with metadata and a user ID, and passes the completion status and cancellation flag.
Notification payload transport
autogpt_platform/backend/backend/data/push_sender.py, autogpt_platform/backend/backend/data/push_sender_test.py, autogpt_platform/frontend/src/lib/autogpt-server-api/types.ts
The WebSocket notification type includes the completion payload. Push serialization forwards its display and context fields and applies ordered optional-field removal when the serialized payload exceeds 3,800 bytes.
Browser and push notification rendering
autogpt_platform/frontend/public/push-sw.js, autogpt_platform/frontend/src/app/(platform)/copilot/helpers.ts, autogpt_platform/frontend/src/app/(platform)/copilot/useCopilotNotifications.ts, autogpt_platform/frontend/src/app/(platform)/copilot/__tests__/*, autogpt_platform/frontend/src/services/push-notifications/__tests__/push-sw-helpers.test.ts
Browser notifications resolve each display field from the WebSocket payload or use its fallback. The service worker resolves push content and validates navigation URLs and icons before displaying notifications.

Completion notifications now carry richer content. An oversized message body can still exceed the push size limit, though. Repeated failures can then delete a user's push subscription. Several earlier concerns also still look open: an unsafe click-target URL can be accepted, a valid click target can be overwritten by the raw payload URL, full page URLs can be forwarded to Sentry, and schedules can be hidden on other replicas. Resolve these before merging.

155-161: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Use HOSTED_SENTRY_DSN in instrumentation-client.ts instead of a second copy of the literal.

instrumentation-client.ts Line 14 still hardcodes the same DSN. The relay middleware compares request paths against a URL derived from getSentryDSN(). If one copy changes and the other does not, the tunnel URL and the dsn diverge. Envelopes would then be rejected with 404. Pass environment.getSentryDSN() (or the exported constant) as dsn. The OpenGrep PAN hint is a false positive because the value is a Sentry DSN key.

1-202: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Split the long builder function and order helpers below public functions.

build_copilot_completion_payload runs about 70 lines. It also mixes the session lookup, the owner check, the expert lookup, and payload assembly. The private helpers _truncate and _safe_avatar_url appear above the public functions that use them. Extract _load_session_context and _load_expert_identity helpers. Move the private helpers below the public API. The coding guidelines require both changes: "keep functions under ~40 lines" and "define the main/public function or class first, then the helpers it uses below."

Refactor build_copilot_completion_payload to stay under roughly 40 lines by
extracting the session lookup and owner validation into _load_session_context
and the expert lookup into _load_expert_identity, preserving the existing
best-effort fallbacks and payload behavior. Move private helpers, including
_truncate and _safe_avatar_url, below the public functions that use them.

schedule-indexing method so recovery is visible across scheduler replicas,
rather than relying only on the local `_schedule_index_ready` and
`_schedule_index_failure_version` state. Add a shared near-term reconcile
through the EXECUTION jobstore or retry the index upsert once, reusing the
existing `reconcile_schedule_index` flow where applicable.

Review comments at @autogpt_platform/frontend/public/push-sw.js:

changing the `Object.assign` order so `targetUrl` from `resolvePushContent`
overrides any raw `data.url` value. Preserve the other payload fields for the
notification click handler.

Review comments at
@autogpt_platform/frontend/src/lib/sentry-tunnel-middleware.ts:
- Line 17: Remove "referer" from the forwarded headers in the Sentry tunnel
middleware so the relay cannot send the page URL to Sentry.

autogpt_platform/backend/Dockerfile (1)

90-92: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

The separate Prisma installation already matches the lockfile. autogpt_platform/backend/poetry.lock pins prisma to 0.15.0, and the migrate stage installs prisma==0.15.0. No version-alignment issue remains.

665-676: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The concern is refuted. In LaunchDarkly 9.14.1, EvaluationDetail.variation_index is None only when the default value is returned. A served variation has an index, so not detail.is_default_value() correctly marks it as evaluated. The existing context_resolved guard still handles degraded user contexts.

128-141: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

No actionable double-charge path is established.

cli_session_cost_state returns the last matching row. The repository does not establish that the CLI can append a stale pre-reset row that causes this path to charge earlier spend again. The reset test treats a later higher snapshot as new-session usage.

autogpt_platform/frontend/src/components/layout/Navbar/components/AccountMenu/components/AccountMenuFeedbackRow.tsx (1)

28-28: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The feedback button already has an application-level Tally loader.

app/layout.tsx renders TallyPopupSimple, which invokes useTallyPopup. That hook loads https://tally.so/widgets/embed.js. The row can therefore rely on the existing loader; no local loader or JavaScript API call is required.

92-101: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The session-entry check is not required on the dispatch path. resolve_tool_dispatch maps expert IDs to the intended tools, but hire_expert rejects expert sessions and delegate_to_expert resolves targets within the authenticated user’s team. The claimed material bypass does not remain.

The concern is refuted. hire_expert and delegate_to_expert are registered, non-retired tools. Both inherit BaseTool.is_available, which returns True, so tool_entries includes them in all_tools. The expert implementation references therefore match the permission universe, and the proposed change is unnecessary.

2807-2809: 🩺 Stability & Availability

The requested behavior depends on lookup_job, but the supplied evidence does not include its implementation or the scheduler’s index-cleanup blocks. The available output only shows that parked rows remain in the SQL table and that reconcile_repaired_jobs can later restore them. It does not establish whether the scheduler lookup returns None for parked rows or whether the caller deletes their index entries.

2375-2378: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

No alternate schedule-identity writer is present.

Graph and copilot-turn schedules are created through _persist_schedule, which calls _upsert_schedule_index_row. The other add_job calls create system or lifecycle jobs and do not write graph or copilot-turn schedule kwargs. No modify_job or reschedule_job calls exist. The jobstore repair paths change serialized Enum values or next_run_time, not schedule identity fields.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

An index write failure hides the new schedule on other replicas for up to 24 hours.

The fallback state lives only in the current process. _schedule_index_ready and _schedule_index_failure_version are per-instance values. This file expects more than one scheduler replica to share the index. Lines 2059-2061 mention "Two replicas racing create_all()", and lines 2865-2868 mention wiping "the shared index for every replica".

Here is the failure path:

  1. Replica A runs add_job, which succeeds.
  2. The upsert of the index row then fails.
  3. Replica A sets its own _schedule_index_ready = False and keeps returning the schedule through full scans.
  4. Replica B is still ready. Its candidate_job_ids(user_id=...) call returns no row for the schedule, so B leaves it out of every filtered listing.

On replica B, the user cannot see the schedule in the library and cannot delete it from the UI. The row comes back only when the daily reconcile_schedule_index job runs on some replica. The interval is hours=24, and every restart pushes the next run out again because the job uses replace_existing=True.

The fix needs a heal path that works across replicas. Do not rely only on local state. One option: on failure, put a one-shot reconcile into the shared EXECUTION jobstore so that any replica repairs the row soon. Another option: retry the upsert once before you give up.

Update the index-write failure handler in the schedule-indexing method so
recovery is visible across scheduler replicas, rather than relying only on the
local `_schedule_index_ready` and `_schedule_index_failure_version` state. Add a
shared near-term reconcile through the EXECUTION jobstore or retry the index
upsert once, reusing the existing `reconcile_schedule_index` flow where

Do not forward the full Referer to Sentry.

The configured strict-origin-when-cross-origin policy retains the full URL for same-origin requests. The Sentry tunnel is same-origin, and the relay forwards referer unchanged to the Sentry ingest URL. A page URL containing a token can therefore reach Sentry.

🟡 Minor · Preserve failure status in the browser fallback. · helpers.ts:39-51

autogpt_platform/frontend/src/app/(platform)/copilot/helpers.ts:39-51
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve failure status in the browser fallback.

When publish_copilot_completion emits a bare payload, it still includes status: "failed" but no body. The browser handler passes this payload to resolveCompletionNotificationContent, which falls back to "Task completed". Users can therefore receive success copy for a failed session.

Use the status-aware fallback in this helper. The service-worker click-target merge does not affect this browser notification path.

Suggested fix
 export function resolveCompletionNotificationContent(notification: unknown): {
   title: string;
   body: string;
   icon: string;
 } {
   const record =
     typeof notification === "object" && notification !== null

330-330: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Keep completion_notify_test.py under ~300 lines.

The backend file-length rule applies to colocated *_test.py files. Move TestBuildPayload into another colocated test module and share fixtures as needed.

- Line 174: Move the three local json imports in the affected tests to the
module-level imports in the test file, and remove the local import statements.

Review comments at @autogpt_platform/backend/backend/data/push_sender.py:
- Line 89: Update _fit_push_payload and send_push_for_user so a payload that
still exceeds MAX_PUSH_BYTES after optional fields are removed is never sent;
fit required display fields within the budget or skip the push without counting
it as a subscription failure. Update the oversized-body test to assert the
chosen behavior.

Completion notifications now say what happened and who did it: the title
names the expert (or AutoPilot), the body summarizes the finished work,
needs, or failure, the icon shows the expert's avatar, and clicking opens
the chat. The service worker renders server-provided content for any
notification type, with the generic copy as fallback.

Sanitized click URL now wins over the raw payload url in push-sw.js, and
user-initiated stops publish no completion notification.

session_title and expert_name are truncated at composition so a pathologically
long chat title can't push the Web Push payload past the size limit and get
the subscription deleted by the failure janitor.

Serialize push JSON as UTF-8 instead of ASCII escapes and measure the encoded
bytes against a 3,800-byte budget, shedding session_title, expert_name, then
icon until it fits, so multi-byte titles can't overflow delivery into the
subscription-deletion path.

Reject backslashes and control characters in service-worker URLs (shared
helper now also guards client URL reports), cap sender title/body for any
publisher, shed url as a last resort, and hoist test json imports.
