Load the build and HIL mechanics from agentrc's arduino skill - #602
The build and HIL mechanics from #595 move to agentrc's shared arduino skill (hathach/agentrc#397), now also used by
Adafruit_SPIFlash. What stays here is this library's profile: boards, classification, CORE_CONSUMED, the CDC/HID/MSC
and host tests, and the roster checks.
Changes:
agentrc_pin.py loads the installed agentrc (${AGENTRC_DIR:-$HOME/.claude}) on a dev PC, never fetching it;
only CI (GITHUB_ACTIONS/CI true) fetches the commit test/hil/agentrc.json pins. pre-commit runs agentrc_pin.py test, which does the same.
ESP boards set no_serial explicitly in the roster.
EXTRA_DEPENDENCIES mirrors CI's ARDUINO_LIBS; builds refuse a missing dependency up front.
Records are schema 2 and bind the dependencies, contract files and agentrc closure.
The RP2040/RP2350 pull-up detach is the engine's.
Farm boards in test/hil/ci.json name their "probe"; the flasher comes from agentrc's board registry, and the roster
name is the registry name and the board's lock.
library.properties changes build as shared code; msc_esp32_file_browser, which no profile board may build, is
pinned in the contract tests.
The battery (tusb-3924e42-1) passes on raspberry_pi_pico, adafruit_fruit_jam, metro_m4_express,
raspberry_pi_pico_w (host), espressif_s3_devkitm and espressif_p4_function_ev.
raspberry_pi_pico2 fails its host check: the Kingston stick on its port has not enumerated since 2026-11-02, a rig
fault; its cleanup hold was released.
A session (sess-3924e42-1) on raspberry_pi_pico opened, staged, flashed serial_echo, passed cdc_echo and
closed, restored and released.
Contract tests pass against the installed agentrc and, with CI=true, against the fetched pin.
Earlier, at 82b0906: a held Adafruit_SPIFlash session on metro_m4_express made this battery report the board
locked, not run and untouched (tua-lock-6), and the reverse was refused the same way (spif-lock-7).
pre-commit fails in its doxygen step, as on master (#596); this PR does not touch src/.
Build and HIL scripts now provide library-specific profiles to shared agentrc Arduino engines. The changes add agentrc source selection and identity checks, update HIL roster configuration and session guidance, and revise tests and developer instructions to use the selected agentrc source.

Summary
Agentrc selection and validation .claude/skills/hil-contract/scripts/agentrc_pin.py, .claude/test/test_agentrc_pin.py, test/hil/agentrc.json, .pre-commit-config.yaml, CLAUDE.md
The pin helper selects staged, CI-pinned, or installed agentrc sources. It validates engine files and profile compatibility, reports identity and file digests, and adds a test command. The pinned commit changes, and pre-commit runs the helper’s test command against the selected source.
Build engine and library profile .claude/skills/build/scripts/check_build.py, .claude/skills/build/SKILL.md, .claude/test/test_build.py
The build script supplies library configuration and source classification, then delegates to the agentrc build engine. Documentation describes build records, dependency rules, and selection guidance. Tests use engine APIs for classification, selection, and pin-error handling.
HIL profile, roster, and contract .claude/skills/hil-contract/scripts/hil_test.py, .claude/skills/hil-contract/SKILL.md, .claude/test/test_hil.py, test/hil/ci.json
The HIL script binds the agentrc engine and provides library-specific checks and callbacks. Roster entries use probe identifiers, and ESP32 entries set no_serial. Documentation and tests cover profile behavior, board rules, host steps, HID, and MSC.
The remote wrapper loads the agentrc remote script and delegates command execution with the HIL profile. Documentation describes session outcomes, and tests cover wrapper behavior and pin errors.
adafruit/Adafruit_TinyUSB_Arduino#598 — The PR marks ESP32 boards as no_serial and documents port-based identification, addressing the harness identification behavior described in the issue.
No actionable merge-blocking risk remains. Real-engine staged loading is covered, and preserving literal pin values avoids changing valid local repository paths.

Add a staged load() test that runs an engine from ROOT/agentrc.
test_a_staged_tree_loads_its_own_copy checks only staged() and root(). No test runs load() to a successful result on a staged tree. A change that made load() read hil_load.py or an engine from the checkout would still pass.
mock.patch.dict(sys.modules) restores sys.modules on exit. It does not remove an entry that already exists on entry. loader() reuses a cached agentrc_hil_load and skips the stub, so the test must remove that entry itself. The removal must run inside the restoring context so the entry is restored on exit.

Review comment at @.claude/test/test_hil_remote.py around lines 66 - 70:
Extend test_a_staged_tree_loads_its_own_copy to verify agentrc_pin.load()
succeeds using an engine and required files under the staged ROOT/agentrc tree,
and returns a result that identifies the staged engine. Within a
mock.patch.dict(sys.modules) restoring context, remove any pre-existing
agentrc_hil_load entry before calling load(); retain the existing ROOT and
checkout patches so the test also verifies the staged path does not use the
checkout.
A source archive or plain copy has no .git but no agentrc/ either; it was
treated as a staged rig tree, so check_build.py failed with a PinError that
`agentrc_pin.py fetch` could not clear. The staged-load test now checks that
load() reads the staged engine rather than the checkout.
Fixed in 364df56 and folded into one test in 6ead010: test_a_staged_tree_loads_its_own_copy (.claude/test/test_hil_remote.py:68) pops agentrc_hil_load inside mock.patch.dict(sys.modules) (:70, :73), patches checkout to raise, writes a staged hil_load.py stub, and asserts agentrc_pin.load(rel) == 'STAGED:' + rel (:85).
test_a_staged_tree_loads_its_own_copy writes empty engine files and a stub hil_load.py, so it does not execute the real engine code. A staged engine that needs a file outside its FILES declaration would not be caught by this test. The module docstring already states that the stubs cover only the plumbing. Consider a test that copies the declared engine closure from a complete checkout and loads it through agentrc_pin.load.

Update test_a_staged_tree_loads_its_own_copy to copy the declared engine closure
from a complete checkout into the staged tree and load it through
agentrc_pin.load, rather than writing empty engine files and a stub hil_load.py.
Keep the test focused on verifying that the real engine runs using only files
declared in FILES.

Fixed in df6e7e7: test_the_real_engines_load_from_their_staged_closure_alone (.claude/test/test_hil_remote.py:88) copies only the pinned identity()['files'] closure into a staged tree and, in a fresh interpreter with checkout patched to raise, loads each real engine through agentrc_pin.load.
It asserts every non-stdlib module loaded comes from the staged agentrc/ (:118-119), so an engine needing a file outside its FILES closure fails the test.
The staged-tree test loaded stub engines, so an engine that needed a file outside its FILES closure passed.
The new test copies only the pinned identity files and loads the real engines in a fresh interpreter.

62-63: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Low value
Name the pin file in the error that fetch() raises for a padded pin URL.
pin() accepts a URL with leading or trailing whitespace. It returns the value unchanged at line 65. fetch() passes that value to git remote add, which stores it as written. Git can reject the stored value later, and fetch() then raises a PinError that contains only git's message. That message does not name PIN_FILE or show the padded value.
Add the pin file name and the URL to the PinError that fetch() raises when git fails. Keep the returned value unchanged. Trimming the value would change which repository git resolves for a local directory whose name ends in a space, so the returned value should not be trimmed.

Name the pin file in the error that fetch() raises for a padded pin URL.
The error already shows the padded value. fetch() puts git's message in the PinError (agentrc_pin.py:109), and git quotes the stored value with its padding:
fatal: unable to access 'https://github.com/hathach/agentrc /'
fatal: '/tmp/x ' does not appear to be a git repository
fatal: protocol ' https' is not supported
fetch() runs in CI only, and its url comes only from pin() (agentrc_pin.py:94), so the error can only point back to test/hil/agentrc.json.
