arduino: share the library build and HIL engines - #397
skills/arduino holds the Arduino library build and HIL mechanics that lived only in Adafruit_TinyUSB_Arduino: arduino_build.py (selection, compiles, dependency and header provenance, span checks, the HIL build record), arduino_hil.py (record admission, flashing, DUT identity, board lifecycle, sessions, commissioning, report) and arduino_remote.py (staging on a rig). A library keeps a profile: its boards, classification, HIL sketches, tests
and roster checks; its agentrc_pin.py loads the engines from the installed agentrc
(${AGENTRC_DIR:-$HOME/.claude}, never fetched) on a dev PC, the commit test/hil/agentrc.json pins in CI, and the
staged copy on a rig. Adafruit_SPIFlash is the second consumer, so the boundary is drawn from two libraries.
Couplings from the issue, as resolved:
VID:PID comes from the profile (vid_pid); SPIFlash takes the roster's commissioned arduino.vid_pid.
no_serial (with usb_port) is its own roster setting; usb_port alone only filters a serial match.
Dependencies: depends= plus EXTRA_DEPENDENCIES, resolved transitively against installed user libraries before
any compile (exit 2 names the arduino-cli lib install line), hashed, drift-checked after the build and recorded.
A user copy shadowing a library the build's own core bundles (samd's SPI pulls in Adafruit_ZeroDMA) is hashed up
front and admitted only for that core.
The RP2040/RP2350 pull-up detach is keyed by the openocd flasher's target cfg in the engine rather than opted into
per library: it is the chip's and the probe reset's, not a library's (same single mww to the SIE_CTRL clear
alias; RP2040 and RP2350 datasheets checked).
Record schema 2 binds the library, its contract files and the agentrc closure by sha256 (its commit and dirty flag
as provenance); the harness refuses a record from another library, contract or agentrc files. A process refuses to
write, admit or stage a record once agentrc's files changed after it loaded them, and a session refuses records of
other agentrc files than it opened with. PROFILE_API in arduino_build.py lets a library refuse engines of
another profile interface before loading them.
Selection: library.properties is shared code (#403). Each library's contract tests pin unbuildable_examples(), the
examples no profile board may build, instead of a source change skipping them unseen. A --board/--example run is narrowed and warns that the change's own selection was not verified.
Rosters name a farm board by its "probe" serial; the engines resolve its flasher through #400's board registry
(skills/hil/boards.json), and the roster name must be the registry name, which is the board's lock. Both libraries'
harnesses take that lock and the one pending kind arduino-hil, so they exclude each other and tinyusb/tinyuf2 on a
shared board. A session holds its lock under a reason unique to its attempt.
Whole suite: 4484 tests OK (127 skipped) at fed73e0.
ci.lan at fed73e0, records built on a dev PC from the installed agentrc (this branch's checkout, clean):
TinyUSB tusb-fed73e0-1: raspberry_pi_pico, adafruit_fruit_jam, metro_m4_express, raspberry_pi_pico_w (host),
espressif_s3_devkitm and espressif_p4_function_ev pass. raspberry_pi_pico2 failed its host check: the Kingston
stick on its port still does not enumerate (rig fault since 2026-11-02); its cleanup hold was released.
SPIFlash spiflash-fed73e0-1: metro_m4_express and raspberry_pi_pico pass, each region read back erased.
Session sess-fed73e0-1 on raspberry_pi_pico: open, stage, flash serial_echo (enumerated 239a:cafe), close
restored and released.
Both libraries' contract tests pass against the installed agentrc and, with CI=true, against the fetched pin.
ci.lan at 036e0b7: session close gets exit 3 from the rig after a session restore --release already released
the board, and closes, restore unconfirmed (tua-sess-2).
ci.lan, both libraries pinned to 28ccfdb (the commits before the rebase onto main):
SPIFlash spif-reg-1: metro_m4_express and raspberry_pi_pico pass (spiflash_region, the Pico detached).
TinyUSB tua-reg-1, tua-reg-2: six boards pass (raspberry_pi_pico, adafruit_fruit_jam, metro_m4_express,
raspberry_pi_pico_w host, espressif_s3_devkitm, espressif_p4_function_ev); the Pico and the Fruit Jam detached.
raspberry_pi_pico2 not run: held since its Kingston stick stopped enumerating on 2026-11-02 (needs a power cycle).
Lock exclusion both ways on metro_m4_express under the per-attempt hold: the other library's battery reported it
locked, not run, untouched (spif-lock-6/tua-lock-6, tua-lock-7/spif-lock-7); each session close restored
the board and released its hold.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
This change adds shared Arduino build and HIL engines, a guide to their contracts, and fixture-based tests. The build engine selects and compiles eligible sketches, checks dependencies and provenance, and creates HIL build records. The HIL harness validates records and manages board operations, tests, restoration, locks, and reports. The remote engine stages manifest-pinned inputs, runs and collects HIL attempts, and manages held-board sessions.
Possibly related issues
hathach/agentrc#399 — This change adds shared Arduino engines, while the issue concerns duplicated per-library bootstrap code used to load them.
hathach/agentrc#398 — The build engine records core provenance, but the issue notes that a dirty core’s changed bytes are not identified.
hathach/agentrc#198 — The engines coordinate locks across libraries but retain project-specific rosters rather than adding a shared physical-board inventory.
hathach/agentrc#421 — The Arduino engine resolves roster boards through the registry, which is the resolution path whose probe serial validation the issue addresses.
hathach/agentrc#411 — The HIL engine reads roster OpenOCD settings, the duplicated configuration addressed by the issue.

Explanation
The changed files, from the whole-PR file summary, are: README.md and skills/arduino/SKILL.md; the three engines in skills/arduino/scripts/; test support (tests/helpers.py, tests/fixtures/arduino_lib/ fake library, profile, and examples); the Arduino test modules; and skills/hil/scripts/hil_lock.py with tests/test_hil_lock.py.
Each change maps to an objective. The engines implement #390 extraction, #403 classification, and #409 registry resolution. The fixture and test files support those engines. The holder_alive() addition in hil_lock.py supports holder liveness for the shared board-lock path that the PR description and arduino_hil.py use. Its call site was not read. No unrelated product or feature change appears in the file list.
Full diffs were not read because the diff tool reported missing blobs. This PASS relies on the file-level summary.

Explanation
Objectives are grouped by issue. Evidence is the head file reads (2283f20), the whole-PR file summary, and the author's reported runs.
[#390, #403, #409] Shared engines are present: skills/arduino/scripts/arduino_build.py, arduino_hil.py, and arduino_remote.py. Profiles bind through bind(profile) and PROFILE_API. declared_dependencies() merges depends= with EXTRA_DEPENDENCIES before any compile. Records bind the library, contract files, and agentrc closure by sha256. Registry-based roster resolution is present (rig_roster() uses hil_boards.resolve_roster and lock_name, and refuses boards without a rig profile). The #403 engine rule is present: classify() returns 'shared' for library.properties. tests/test_arduino_build.py test_rules asserts 'library.properties': ('shared', None).
[#403] Unmet item. The issue requires dropping library.properties from the fixture NOTHING tuple. At head, tests/fixtures/arduino_lib/fake_profile.py still sets NOTHING=('docs/', 'library.properties'). The test comment states that this entry is kept on purpose to show that 'shared' takes precedence over NOTHING. The issue names this removal explicitly, so the item is not met.
[#390] Consumer-side items (SPIFlash minimal profile and nonce-bound serial test; moving Adafruit_TinyUSB_Arduino onto the shared code) are in adafruit/Adafruit_TinyUSB_Arduino#602 and adafruit/Adafruit_SPIFlash#196. Those repositories are not in this checkout. The PR objectives also treat TinyUSB migration as separate follow-up work. They are not used as the FAIL basis. Author-reported hardware runs are not verified from source. The author's test count (4484 passing) applies to fed73e0, not to 2283f20.
[#409] Library-side probe migration and re-pinning are deferred by the issue to separate PRs. They are not required here.
The changes since the previous review could not be read: the incremental diff tool reported missing blobs. The FAIL rests on the file read at head.
Resolution
In tests/fixtures/arduino_lib/fake_profile.py, remove 'library.properties' from NOTHING (line 82, currently NOTHING=('docs/', 'library.properties')). Keep the expectation ('shared', None) in tests/test_arduino_build.py. Re-run tests/test_arduino_build.py and report the result at the reviewed head. The TinyUSB profile alignment named in #403 is in an external repository and is not part of this remediation.

Summary
The PR shares Arduino library build and HIL code through library-supplied profiles.
Arduino library builds now follow each library's profile and produce pinned HIL records.
Hardware tests now share a board-safe Arduino lifecycle across libraries.
Remote Arduino runs now stage pinned builds and manage board sessions.
All five supplied previous threads were rechecked against the current code. Their fixes remain in place. None supplied a Comment number, so previousFindings is empty.
No new actionable issues or repository-rule violations were found. No tests or hardware checks were run during this review.

* Add agent build and HIL contracts
* Match hex before decimal in fs_window regexes
The decimal branch was tried first, so LENGTH = 0xff000 captured only the leading 0 and understated flash_end.
* Classify .coderabbit.yaml as needing no build
* Build every family when library.properties changes
* Pin agentrc 5baa598: rosters name boards by probe, library.properties builds, unbuildable examples pinned, per-attempt session hold
* Pin agentrc 036e0b7: a session command no longer held exits 3, and session close closes on it
* agents: load the installed agentrc locally and fetch the pin only in CI; pin agentrc fed73e0
* agentrc_pin: refuse a malformed staged manifest with a PinError; resolve AGENTRC_DIR to an absolute path
* hil-contract: name the arduino skill's HIL build record entry
* hil-contract: erase the region when spiflash_region fails after its RUN
* hil-contract: skip the cleanup ERASE on an abort and log its failure
* hil-contract: document erasing a region left programmed; test the cleanup deadline
* Pin agentrc 3924e42, hathach/agentrc#397's merge
* hil-contract: refuse a malformed agentrc pin with PinError
pin() let FileNotFoundError, JSONDecodeError, KeyError and TypeError escape, so check_build.py,
agentrc_pin.py, hil_test.py and hil_remote.py ended in a traceback instead of the JSON error line
and exit 2. pin() now validates the url and the 40-hex commit before any cache or fetch use.

* Load the build and HIL mechanics from agentrc's arduino skill
* Match quoted argparse choices in the hil_remote test
Newer argparse quotes each choice in the invalid-choice error, so the
test strips quotes before checking the joined profile list.
* Fix agentrc_pin staged detection and test the staged load path
A source archive or plain copy has no .git but no agentrc/ either; it was
treated as a staged rig tree, so check_build.py failed with a PinError that
`agentrc_pin.py fetch` could not clear. The staged-load test now checks that
load() reads the staged engine rather than the checkout.
* Fold the staged engine load into the staged-tree test
* Pin agentrc 5baa598: rosters name boards by probe, library.properties builds, unbuildable examples pinned, per-attempt session hold
* Run the real engines from a staged tree in the pin test
The staged-tree test loaded stub engines, so an engine that needed a file outside its FILES closure passed.
The new test copies only the pinned identity files and loads the real engines in a fresh interpreter.
* Reuse one identity record for the staged closure's source and files
* Pin agentrc 036e0b7: a session command no longer held exits 3, and session close closes on it
* agents: load the installed agentrc locally and fetch the pin only in CI; pin agentrc fed73e0
* Refuse a malformed staged manifest with a PinError and pass test()'s child the validated agentrc path
* Refuse a too deeply nested staged manifest with a PinError
* agentrc_pin: resolve AGENTRC_DIR to an absolute path where it is read
* Pin agentrc 3924e42, hathach/agentrc#397's merge
* Resync the PR head after GitHub's outage (empty)
* hil-contract: refuse a malformed agentrc pin with PinError
* hil-contract: refuse a blank agentrc pin url
