Adding minimal SAMD51 port based on uf2-samdx1 implementation - #616
Replacement for #584 by @SukuWc, whose branch lives in an organization-owned fork that maintainers cannot push to. This branch is #584's head 5edf5873 with master merged in; the only conflict was the expected port list in .claude/test/test_build.py, now lpc55 plus samd51.
Merge with Create a merge commit, not squash, so #584's commits land unchanged and #584 shows as merged.
On top, two commits address the review findings:
board_flash_size() excludes the SmartEEPROM area, which faults on any AHB access (DS60001507 25.6.2), so CURRENT.UF2 reads and the write bound stay below it
manual quad-word writes do the AHB0 read the datasheet requires before the command (25.6.6.2); all-ones quad words are left erased
one vector table check for the app and the self-update image: SP inside HSRAM, Thumb reset entry inside the target range
a linker assert that the boot size matches BOOTPROT's 8 KB granularity
README: keep the user row's factory BOD12 calibration, erratum 2.6.10's fuse workaround, the failed-update recovery case
Not addressed here: an unfinished transfer leaves _wr_state (core) and this port's good_rows set, so a following file can complete early or erase a block many times; that needs a core change. License headers and the product string are left to Intech Studio.
Metro M4 Express is added on top, with a fix found while bringing it up:
metro_m4_express board (16 KB bootloader, double tap, J-Link target) and its board list row
the cycle-counter waits re-enable DWT: a J-Link session ending within ~600 ms of reset left SET_CONFIGURATION without its status stage (8/8 runs), most likely because the detach clears DEMCR.TRCENA and tud_mount_cb's NeoPixel latch wait then spins on CYCCNT; 13/13 runs enumerate after the fix
the HIL runner finds the DFP startup's vector table (exception_table), and the linker script names its data output section .data
the board joins the ci.lan HIL farm (test/hil/ci.json), re-entry by retained register
the HIL job's workspace clean moves the old tree aside, so a file another user left in it (a __pycache__ from an ssh session in the runner's group) warns instead of failing the job
New ports/samd51 for SAMD51N20A, built with CMake like stm32h5 and maxim.
- Boards intech_grid and intech_wrid (same hardware and USB IDs, different
volume label), application at 0x4000 behind a 16 KB bootloader.
- Bootloader enters DFU on the PC11 button or an invalid application, through
board_app_valid2(). Neopixel indicator on PB30, BOD33 set to 2.7V, DFLL in
USB clock recovery mode (no crystal).
- UF2 writes are limited to whole 256 byte rows of the application area. Rows
already holding their data are skipped and a block is erased only when a
differing row needs it, keeping the rows already written.
- The bootloader protects itself with BOOTPROT (TINYUF2_PROTECT_BOOTLOADER).
The self-update app lifts it with SBPDIS, rewrites the bootloader area and
erases its own first block from RAM.
- The blinky and self-update apps are built. A Debug build increases the boot
size to 64 KB like stm32h5.
- CI: samd51 in the arm-cmake job, check_build.py backends and representatives.

Name the level that switches the neopixel supply on instead of hard coding
it, as NEOPIXEL_POWER_PIN and NEOPIXEL_POWER_STATE do in the espressif boards.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The UF2 spec describes Board-ID as dash-separated tokens: CPU type, board type
and board revision. Add the revision token, as the other boards do:
SAMD51N20A-GRID-v0 and SAMD51N20A-WRID-v0.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The _NS constants did not match the measured pulse widths because the
PORT writes and cycle counter reads add a fixed cost. Count in cycles
instead, so the names say what is programmed. The bit period now measures
about 1.2us, close to the nominal 1.25us.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The application linker script capped the flash at 256 KB although the
boards have 1 MB. Pass the flash size from board.cmake like the boot and
RAM sizes, so a board with another SAMD51 variant only sets its own values.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A Cortex-M reset handler address must have the Thumb bit set. An image
with an even or zero vector passed the self-update validation, replaced
the bootloader and could not start. Also document that a power cut while
the BOOTPROT fuse is rewritten leaves the user page blank.

Summary
Metro M4 Express HIL coverage .claude/skills/hil-contract/SKILL.md, .claude/skills/hil-contract/bench-history.md, .claude/test/test_hil_ci.py, test/hil/ci.json
Adds Metro M4 Express HIL configuration and commissioning records, and changes the test expectation for boards pending selection.
HIL workspace and hosted-build procedures .claude/skills/hil-contract/commissioning.md, .github/workflows/hil.yml
Moves hosted-build instructions to the lead’s checkout and changes workspace cleanup to move and remove stale paths, with a warning if removal fails.
Bootloader updates have a tool-dependent fallback, and failed HIL workspace cleanup may provide an incomplete warning; both have bounded workarounds.

### Issue 1
.claude/skills/hil-contract/scripts/hil_test.py:undefined-71
If a Metro reserves SmartEEPROM with `SEESTAT.SBLK = 1`, the firmware correctly reports `0x0007C000` bytes, but the new HIL path expects the full `0x00080000` from `facts['flashSize']`. `Battery.dfu()` rejects the board, and cleanup repeats the same failing size check. This makes a valid board fail the test and can leave it held for recovery.
Read the active reservation when deriving the expected size, or reject this configuration before flashing.
---
For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary
Adds a SAMD51 port for Grid, Wrid, and Metro M4 Express.
SAMD51 boards can install UF2 apps and update their bootloader.
Metro M4 Express enters by double tap and keeps timing waits running.
Build and hardware-test jobs now recognize SAMD51 boards.
No new findings. This review did not run builds or hardware tests.

…f2conv base
An image whose reset entry lies past bootloader_len passed the check, so a
self-update could leave the board unbootable. The README's Debug example
linked at 0x10000 but its uf2conv command still used 0x4000.
@hathach thaks for taking the PR and improving it, what can I do to help test this on real hardware? Are there a list of manual tests needed before merging a new port?

After a J-Link session ends within ~600 ms of the bootloader starting, as a
J-Link install does, SET_CONFIGURATION never got its status stage on a Metro
M4 Express (8/8 runs; 6/6 enumerate with this change). tud_mount_cb writes the
NeoPixel before the status, and its latch wait reads CYCCNT. The detach most
likely disables DWT (DEMCR.TRCENA), under which CYCCNT reads are UNKNOWN.
Tools that look for .data by name, such as the HIL runner's board facts, did
not find it. The startup copies by _srelocate/_erelocate, so the layout is
unchanged.

perfect, thank you very much for the PR. I also added metro m4 to hil run and it passed. @SukuWc please re-test with your board on the PR tip. If there is no major issue (minor can be a followup) we can merge this
I tested all the artifacts for my boards, including the update-tinyuf2 and blinky apps, no regression found. Ready to marge as far as I can test!
Thanks!
