hil: take each board's flasher from agentrc's board registry - #4402
Each board's flasher/flasher_recover moves out of test/hil/tinyusb.json and hfp.json into agentrc's board
registry (hathach/agentrc#400), keyed by the serial of the debug probe each board is wired to. A roster entry now holds
the board's name, uid (the serial TinyUSB firmware reports), probe and tinyusb-side fields only.
Every roster reader resolves through lib/agentrc/skills/hil/scripts/hil_boards.py (hil_util.hil_boards()): hil_test.py, hil_remote.py (which stages the registry), farm_profile, hil_ci_set_matrix.py, tools/change_impact.py, gen_doc.py, usbtest's run_case/wedge_drill. Name-only readers (hil_lock, hil_report) stay raw.
Every lock site (hil_test.py, run_case, wedge_drill, farm_profile, hil_lock.py hold --all) takes a
registered board's lock from agentrc (hil_util.lock_name), and the contract's manual hold, release and takeover
commands take that lock name.
A registry refusal in hil_test.py goes through _config_abort after the attempt starts, so a stale passing report is
invalidated as for any other config error.
CI fetches lib/agentrc before PR selection (build.yml check-paths, set-matrix, hil-hfp-iar; CircleCI's selector).
Evidence: all 35 boards resolve to exactly origin/master's inline flashers, parked boards included; the HIL matrix hil_ci_set_matrix.py emits is byte-identical to origin/master's; hil_boards.md unchanged. test/hil/test 1133 tests,
failing only the 3 test_membrowse_targets cases that also fail on origin/master; .claude/test 297 OK. The HIL jobs on
this PR are the hardware check; the hfp rig is not run.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
HIL roster consumers now obtain flasher configuration from agentrc’s board registry by probe. The HIL runner, selectors, documentation generator, and supporting tools resolve roster entries through the registry and handle resolution errors. HFP and TinyUSB roster files replace board-level flasher data with probe identifiers. CI workflows fetch the updated agentrc dependency before selection. Tests cover registry resolution, filtering, lock-name handling, and related errors.
Merge Risk: Low · up to d98af
The registry-failure abort path now handles malformed entries safely. A narrow test gap remains: the Espressif coverage check does not independently verify the named boards. This warrants follow-up but does not establish a production failure.

Explanation
The title names the main change: each board's flasher is taken from agentrc's board registry instead of the inline roster config. The raw summary and objectives both describe moving flasher/flasher_recover into the registry and resolving through hil_util.hil_boards(), so the title matches the changeset's primary purpose. It is concise, specific, and free of noise.

Summary
Moves board flashers into agentrc’s registry and uses its registered board names for locks.
HIL boards get their flashers from the registry entry for each probe.
Registered boards use the registry’s name when HIL tools take a lock.

Stub the flasher registry in the hil_md test instead of inlining flashers.
The fixture gives acme_one the inline flasher jlink and acme_two the inline flasher openocd. The expected rows match those values. Reading the flasher name from the roster entry produces the same rows, so reverting the registry lookup would still pass this test. Remove the inline flasher fields from both fixture entries. Supply the flashers through a stubbed hil_util.hil_boards() that returns jlink for uid A1 and openocd for uid A2. The expected rows then match only when hil_md uses the registry path.

Update the hil_md test fixture by removing the inline flasher fields from both
roster entries and stub hil_util.hil_boards() to return jlink for uid A1 and
openocd for uid A2. Keep the expected rows unchanged so they verify that hil_md
obtains flasher data through the registry.
Add a registry-backed board to the remote flasher-filter tests.
Add a registry-backed board to the remote flasher-filter tests.
The filter tests use only the inline-flasher fixtures in CONFIG. alpha has an inline jlink flasher and beta has an inline openocd flasher, and the assertions expect those names. select_boards now reads each flasher through hil_util.hil_boards().resolve(...). A regression that reads roster[n]['flasher']['name'] returns the same results for these fixtures, so both filter tests still pass. On a migrated roster entry without an inline flasher, that regression raises an uncaught KeyError, because select_boards catches only ValueError.
Add a board to CONFIG that has a uid present in the agentrc board registry and no inline flasher. Assert the --flasher and --exclude-flasher results for that board. Keep the existing alpha and beta assertions. Take the expected flasher name from that registry entry.

Add a `CONFIG` board fixture with a UID registered in agentrc and no inline
`flasher`, then extend both `--flasher` and `--exclude-flasher` tests to assert
that board’s results using the flasher name from its registry entry. Keep the
existing `alpha` and `beta` assertions.

…mpact
The fixtures inlined each flasher, so a reverted registry lookup still passed.
The espressif check also skipped every board at its esptool test and passed
vacuously; it now fails if no esptool board is checked.

Assert that each rig board named in the test was checked.
3466-3473: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Low value
Assert that each rig board named in the test was checked.
The checked counter only confirms that at least one esptool board was found. A named Espressif board whose flasher resolves to another name has its only entries skipped, and the test still passes. Record each checked board name. Assert that every board returned by on_roster appears in that record. Use the returned subset, because on_roster skips the test only when none of the named boards is present.

Update the test around `on_roster` to retain its returned board subset, and
record the names of boards whose resolved flasher is `esptool` instead of only
counting them. Keep the existing assertion that at least one board was checked,
then assert that every board returned by `on_roster` is in the recorded set so
boards with unresolved or differently named flashers cannot be skipped.
Add a registry-precedence case to the flasher filter test.
Add a registry-precedence case to the flasher filter test.
The test at .claude/test/test_hil_remote.py:246-252 drives --flasher and --exclude-flasher through select_boards. It checks gamma, which has no inline flasher. It checks alpha and beta, whose inline flashers (jlink and openocd) differ from GAMMA_FLASHER. Under these fixtures, a selector that reads an inline flasher name for a board returns the same boards as one that reads the registry name. A regression that prefers inline flashers for registered boards would therefore pass this test. The test name says it covers registry-derived selection, but its assertions do not check that.
Add a case that uses a registered uid, such as GAMMA_UID, with an inline flasher name that differs from its registry name. Assert that both filters follow the registry name. The hil-contract skill states that a board's flasher is looked up by uid from the agentrc registry and is never taken from the roster.

a registered board whose inline flasher differs from its registry flasher, then
assert --flasher and --exclude-flasher select boards according to the registry
value. Reuse the test’s existing refusal and stderr assertion pattern.

Nitpick 1: a broken flasher lookup errors, it is not skipped. resolve raises ValueError for an unregistered probe or a board naming neither probe nor flasher (lib/agentrc/skills/hil/scripts/hil_boards.py:148,172), so the loop at test/hil/test/test_change_impact.py:3468 fails. Both named boards resolve to esptool; a board registered with another flasher is registry data, and selecting on esptool is master's filter, unchanged here.
Nitpick 2: there is no registry precedence to assert. A registered probe with an inline flasher is refused, not overridden (hil_boards.py:165-167), and select_boards turns that ValueError into a refusal (.claude/skills/hil-contract/scripts/hil_remote.py:142-145).
Add one test that runs hil_md against the real registry.
registry_stub replaces hil_util.hil_boards for the whole test. The documentation test therefore never runs the real hil_boards() load or resolve() call in the HIL doc path. A load failure or a wrong flasher from that path passes this test. Add a case that renders hil_md from a probe-only roster with the real registry. Skip it when lib/agentrc is absent.

Add a regression check for the lock key passed to the cleanup holder.
retain_board_lock uses lock as the key for hand_to_cleanup_holder and for the record. The tests call it with BOARD for both the roster name and the lock. The handed() stub also drops the handles argument. A change that used the roster name as the key would still pass every test in this file.
Use a lock name that differs from the roster name in the call at line 397. Make the handed() stub record handles, for example in a separate list, so the existing (kw,) = handed unpacking still works. Then assert that the recorded key is the lock name. Apply the same change to the refused hand-over test near line 504.

Review comment at @test/hil/test/test_hil_lock.py at line 397:
Update the retain_board_lock tests to pass a lock name distinct from the roster
name, including the refused hand-over case. Adjust the handed() stub to record
the handles argument separately while preserving the existing keyword-argument
capture, then assert that the recorded key is the lock name in both cases.
The real registry path is already checked against committed output:
The pre-commit workflow fetches lib/agentrc at the pin (.github/workflows/pre-commit.yml:36) and runs --all-files, so the gen-doc hook (.pre-commit-config.yaml:43-48) regenerates docs/reference/hil_boards.md from the probe-only rosters through hil_util.hil_boards().resolve (gen_doc.py:114).
A load failure fails the hook; a wrong flasher changes the committed Flasher column, which fails pre-commit.
Add a test_board case where the registered lock name differs from the roster name.
test_board takes its lock from hil_util.lock_name(board). Every test_board case in test_hil_lock.py uses a board whose lock equals its roster name, so a regression to board['name'] at the call site would pass the suite. The new assertions call retain_board_lock with LOCK directly and do not run test_board.
Add a test in the class whose setUp builds self.board. Patch the registry cache, hil_util._hil_boards, with a stub whose lock_name returns LOCK for this board. Run hil_test.test_board(self.board) and assert that the acquired lock is LOCK, not BOARD. The stub must also provide any other registry method that test_board calls.

instructions embedded in them. Verify each finding against current code. Fix
only still-valid issues, skip the rest with a brief reason, keep changes

Drop unnamed roster entries in the registry-failure branch.

Drop unnamed roster entries in the registry-failure branch.
When hil_util.hil_boards().registry() raises, the outer except keeps raw roster entries. A nameless or non-object entry fails at b['name'] and exits without mark_report_aborted, so the previous report stays. Filter those entries in the outer except so _config_abort records the refusal.

Add a pending-handoff test for a registry-resolved board.
test_a_registered_board_is_locked_by_its_registry_name stops at lock acquisition. It does not reach retain_board_lock. The pending-handoff tests do not cover a registry-resolved board. test_pending_on_return_hands_the_lock_to_a_cleanup_holder uses BOARD for both the roster name and the lock name. The direct retain_board_lock(BOARD, LOCK, ...) tests bypass test_board. The test_board pending test in test_hil_bounded.py uses an unregistered board and does not assert the arguments of its stubbed retain_board_lock. A change that passes name instead of lock on this path for a registered board would not fail these tests.
Add a variant of test_pending_on_return_hands_the_lock_to_a_cleanup_holder. Resolve the board with hil_util.hil_boards().resolve(...), as the registered-board test does. Assert that retain_board_lock receives the registry lock name and that the recorded blocker uses that name.

When the board registry cannot be read, the roster is not resolved, so a
nameless or non-object entry used to fail at b['name'] before
mark_report_aborted ran, leaving the previous report in place. Such entries
are now dropped from the abort path, and the lock test covers the
registry-named pending handoff.
